January: Houston's Month of Tribute Bands

Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime
I spend a lot of time working out my concert calendar. Even if I don't make it out to all the shows I want to go to, I still like to know when all my favorite bands are going to be in town. So besides the Houston Press' own concert calendar, I spend a lot of time on the great Web site Space City Rock, both of which feature a constantly updated schedule of all the shows going on around Houston.

Thanks to their tireless work, I also happened to notice recently that, wow, there are a lot of tribute bands coming through town this month. I don't exactly know why, but hey, I can't begrudge the phenomena. I mean, it allows people to see Guns N' Roses performed by someone who isn't an asshole, as GN'R impersonators Appetite for Destruction did this past weekend at House of Blues alongside sham-glam rockers Poison'd and Red, White & Crue. And if the '90s are more your speed, the Nirvana Experience and Evil Empire -- whose lead singer even rants just like Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la Rocha -- were right next door at HOB's Bronze Peacock Room.

Five Musicians Who Should Be In the New Star Wars Films

floMB-0628.jpg
The last few weeks, Internet rumors about Florence Welch being cast in the newest Star Wars film have exploded like the Death Star. The film is in its earliest creative stages, and won't have geeks lining up at theaters until 2015. Still, it's natural to start getting itchier than Chewbacca's flea-caked fur about who might appear in the latest installment.

If it's true, Welch is an inspired choice and one that bodes well for things to come. The Florence + The Machine front woman has an otherworldly aura about her. Her voice, her lithe body, that complexion that is so pale it seems to hail from the universe's furthest reaches from the sun. She's perfect.

This, Not That: New Tunes to Replace Some Tired Old Texans Tailgating Songs

texans560.jpg
My family and I have been Houston Texans season ticketholders since Game 1, that celebrated and gratifying franchise opener (Texans 19, Cowboys 10), and we've always taken seriously our tailgating privileges.

Texans fans tailgate better than most, including the North Texas delusionals who do it up there at Jerry's World. We've repeatedly been honored as the NFL's best tailgating experience. I've spoken with visiting fans from all over the country who would agree; we throw an incredible block party where everyone who enjoys football is a welcomed neighbor.

At our own tailgate, we've got one head chef: my brother, Anthony. He creates the menus and then cooks up the good stuff. My youngest brother, Adrian, is our beer steward. He'll pair the cuisine with an elegant Belgian ale or just break out the Tecate for mass quaffing.

That leaves the music to me.
