UPDATED: The Best Acts Not on the 2014 HPMA Ballot Are...

UPDATE (Tuesday, 9 a.m.) to clarify a few reader questions about the write-in process.

(Wednesday, 10 a.m.): also updated in re: duplicate voting.

When Rocks Off announced the 2014 Houston Press Music Award nominees last month, some readers were taken aback by our new method of choosing the nominees. This time we asked a carefully selected panel of music-scene insiders for their suggestions, rather than relying on the public to choose the nominees as in years past.

We stand by our decision, because we know everyone on our committee follows the Houston scene closely and passionately. We trust their judgement implicitly, and think each and every one of the 2014 HPMA nominees deserves a spot on the ballot. But the last thing we wanted to do was to shut out our readers from having any say in the matter. Hardly.

That's why this morning, it gives Rocks Off great pleasure to announce the creation of a HPMA write-in category.

Now, here's how this little experiment is going to work. First, have a look at this year's ballot, because existing nominees are ineligible for this award. Then please write the name of the solo performer or group you'd like to nominate in the comments section below this article. This is an additional category that covers all the others on the ballot; we have not added a write-in spot for each individual category.

Cutoff is 5 p.m. this Friday, July 11. Tell a friend, and feel free to nominate as many artists as you like, but please restrict the nominations to one artists per comment (just to make it easier on us). In other words, if multiple acts are listed in one comment, only the first one will be counted, but feel free to nominate as many names as you like -- as long as they're in separate comments. But if you'd like to vote ten times for a certain act, better to ask ten friends to vote for that act rather than leave ten comments under your own name. Just to keep it fair. Some people have been wondering if duplicate votes count; the short answer is no. Obviously, we can't stop people from commenting under any name they choose, but we will limit to one vote per artist per commenter-name. Hope that helps.

Someone here will tally up the votes and ensure that all the prospective nominees are viable. Next Monday morning we'll reveal the finalists in this brand-new category, and the winner will be announced with the rest of the 2014 HPMA honorees at the awards ceremony Thursday, August 7 at Warehouse Live. Voting in all categories ends at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, July 31.

Don't forget, presale tickets for the 2014 HPMA post-awards concert go on sale at 10 a.m. tomorrow; please use the code ROCKSOFF. They'll be onsale to the general public at 10 a.m. this Friday, but why not go ahead and get them early?

And watch this space closely, because we should be announcing more acts very, very soon to go along with the Suffers and the Tontons. Probably this week.

Time to start nominating your favorites...good luck, everyone!
