Pop Music Needs Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga Needs an Editor

Art is subjective. We all know this, and then we proceed to try and stick art into black and white, good and bad distinctions because art also makes us all irrational. This is especially true on the Internet, where middle ground seems to be nonexistent and if you happen to disagree with someone, not only are you wrong, but you're a troll.

It's hard to understand what makes people so irrational about Lady Gaga.

Consider the following: ARTPOP, her third album, has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide.

One side will look at that number and say, "See, she has tons of loyal fans who wants to buy her records!" The other side will say, "See, she's not as popular as she used to be and her career will soon die a fiery death!" The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

Now, imagine how that irrationality might affect an artist. On one side you have everyone telling you everything you do is perfect, and the other is telling you everything you do is crap. The reality might actually be somewhere in the middle, but would you really be interested in the middle when you can have the irrational positivity?

Rumors of Lady Gaga's imminent career death are greatly exaggerated, but someone needs to move her closer to the middle.

Lady Gaga has yet to make a classic album, and that is not a troll.

The Fame is an okay album that it's easy to believe is great because it has four songs of varying levels of perfection; "Just Dance" and "LoveGame" are both basically perfect with small setbacks, "Poker Face" is perfect and "Paparazzi" zooms past perfection to some level we don't quite have words for. Things do get a lot better when you bolt The Fame Monster onto it, because "Telephone" and "Bad Romance" are also both perfect songs (and "Monster" is pretty nifty, too).

Born This Way is a very fun record that flirts with being a classic, but that weird stretch of not-so-great songs ("Judas"/"Americano"/"Hair") kills the momentum of the beginning, and a lot of the songs on the second half are plain good but not necessarily great.

Artpop, now that the initial wave of intense debate on whether or not it's going to ruin her career has passed, can finally start to be evaluated for what it actually is: an okay record. The bad ("Jewels 'n Drugs"/"Fashion") is still pretty bad, the good ("G.U.Y."/"Gypsy") is still pretty great and the baffling ("Do What U Want") was only made more confusing by those video clips that leaked out recently.

Here's the important part: Lady Gaga is absolutely capable of making a classic album. It takes almost superhuman-level talent to put together the body of singles that she has in the span of her career. So that begs the question: why hasn't she?

ARTFLOP has NOT sold 2.5 million copies worldwide. That is BS that her record company is trying to pass. It has not even sold 2 million copies worldwide. Don't believe the BS you hear from her PR people; they lie about everything.

Is she still around? 7K empty seats at AT&T in SA? Inevitable death spiral.

I'm a Gaga fan, I love ARTPOP however it has its flaws... & I agree with your entire article. She has all these great crazy ideas but somehow doesn't know how to make everything work and were left with a bloated album... Another thing that I have thought about is that This album was ready in december of 2012... & They had her rewrite a lot of the songs and add new ones, which makes me wonder if her lack of success was her own second guessing of her album? She had songs that she talked about but never released and I wonder if they got substituted with other not-so great songs. I wish she would go back to making songs with RedOne instead of DJWS... or just make an album with ZEDD, who produced G.U.Y. which is the song on the album most comparable to Bad Romance and could have had major success had it been the first single!!!

I totally agree! He current producer DJWS sucks horribly! I hope on her next album she  has a way better new producer to help her!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Perfectly put. She is far above other pop stars and keeps people talking. The fact that her "worst" record still has a metacritic rating of 61, which is equal to Katy Perry's best record rating for "Prism", is truly saying something and people need to see it. Katy got this great review for her album but no one wanted to talk about the fact that it got a equal rating as Gaga's, all anyone could focus on is how Gaga didn't make a album as good as before. Every artist has a bad album. Madonna has several terrible albums and still she is considered a force to be reckoned with. People need to just realize that even at her worst Gaga is a name that is always going to be in music and will always push music. Non of the other artists 6years ago were as edgy or dressed how they do now so she truly broke the mold for them (and I understand trolls that the mold was before broken by others but not in this generation)

I agree with this article somewhat. But Cory you do give Gaga way too much credit and props. She stinks now and everybody knows it.

Yes, Paparazzi was/is her true masterpiece. She may never return to that height. Will Red One even work with her? She doesn't want to pay anyone what they are worth...so her product suffers with sub-standard tracks and production quality.

She has not sold 2.5 million. That is a lie. I an surprised she is even able to tour this album. I am sure tickets are not selling because of Artpop. She's just lost too many loyalists.

I am looking forward to Madonna's new album. It will indeed be a refreshing new piece of pop culture and jewel in Madonna's crown.

Miss Angela Cheng, keep doing what you are doing. You are the Queen of Internet Whistle Blowers! If you are really Perez, so who cares, so what? You deserve respect!

@acheng2 Thank you! finally someone noticed that the media keeps inflating her numbers, but the only thing is inflating is her belly (she's a fat slob now)

@acheng2 not sure if ur perez or gaga's pissed off former assistant or just a unibomber type psycho but...ur not really doing anything to HURT gaga. ur just some faceless troll with no credibility. Some people will of course believe the tripe u put out there...if Jesus could convince people he walked on water I'm sure you can continue to get a very SMALL percentage of the public to jump on your "let's get Gaga to commit suicide in front of the world" bandwagon.
