The Five Best Punk Supergroups of All Time

Punk rock is known for bands breaking up just as quickly as they form. So many seminal groups across its history have only one record to their name that critics talk a lot more about bands breaking up than forming for that reason. But every now and then we get the rare punk supergroup, and it always kicks ass.

Recently a lot of them have been re-forming and playing festivals, which we here at Rocks Off are super-psyched about. So in honor of the recent reunions, here are five of the best of all time, including a few you can catch on tour this year.

5. United Nations
Originally formed back in 2005, United Nations was spearheaded by group leader Geoff Rickley from post-hardcore band Thursday as a way to do heavier material with some mysterious, unnamed friends known to be members of Glassjaw and Converge.

The band went dormant for a while, but this year Rickley revived the project for another round of slamming hardcore with members of Pianos Become the Teeth and Circle Takes the Square.

4. Head Wound City
A collaboration between members of the Blood Brothers, the Locust and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Head Wound City was a way for those guys to delve into extreme metal and grindcore, and it kicked ass. Unfortunately, they broke up at the same time the Blood Brothers did.

When the Blood Brothers reunited this year, speculation that Head Wound City could also come back started, and it proved to be true. Head Wound City will return for only their second live show ever later this year at BEDROCKtoberfest in Los Angeles.

3. OFF!
Who would have thought a bunch of old punks from the original SoCal hardcore scene could rock so hard? Still, Keith Morris of Black Flag and Circle Jerks, alongside a backing band consisting of members of Burning Bridges, Redd Kross, Rocket from the Crypt and Hot Snakes, came out hard with this supergroup a few years ago.

Since then they've kept going strong, and for their latest tour, they'll be adding another member from another well-known band. Dale Crover from the Melvins will be their touring drummer for this go-round.

List continues on the next page.
