The Rocks Off 200: Reko Trill, of the Almighty Trill Brothers

Welcome to The Rocks Off 200, our portrait gallery of the most compelling profiles and personalities in the far-flung Houston music community -- a lot more than just musicians, but of course they're in there too. See previous entries in the Rocks Off 100 at this link.

Who? Reko Trill of the Almighty Trill Brothers is a party and club MC who was born and raised in Houston by way of Third Ward. ("Stay Hard!" he proclaims). Reko tells us that his preference is to be on the mike hyping up a crowd rather than actually spinning records. "Every club needs a good MC!" says Trill. "So instead of bitching about it, I'll just be it."

He started MC'ing and hosting pretty organically.

"I went out with my man DJ Cipher damn near every night," he recalls. "Sometimes I'd grab the mike at whatever party we were at and just clowned around. After a while I started getting paid for it."

Home Base? The great city of Houston, TX.

Why Do You Stay In Houston?: "Houston is my jam!" he says with a smile. "There are few places more diverse as far as music, art, food and culture." He is unapologetic if your stance differs from his. "Those people and cities suck, so that doesn't bother me!"

"Houston is a hell of a city," Reko adds. "Pick a night, any night, and there's always something awesome going on...Houston is the America of Texas, Texas is the America of the United States."

Good War Story: Nothing he felt comfortable enough to share, but they usually start with "Hey Reko, wanna grab the mike real quick?"

"Good Lord, man!", he explains. "Even if I shared the cleanest of my war stories, my Mum would kill me!"

Music Scene Pet Peeve: A PSA from Mr. Trill:

I guess my pet peeve would be aimed more at the "customers" of bars and clubs. There is always that one person, usually a chick, that requests a song that has absolutely nothing to do with the venue she's attending.

Then they become very impatient and sometimes a bit hostile when they don't get to hear freaking Marc Anthony at a hip-hop event. Or the ass that asks if there's going to be anything played from 2014 at an "Old School" party. DJs should be able to use pepper spray at will.

Five Desert Island Discs:

  • Outkast, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
  • Stone Temple Pilots, Plush
  • Dr. Dre, The Chronic
  • Rage Against the Machine, Evil Empire
  • UGK , Super Tight

Best Show Ever: Reko's pick is a 1997 Dungeon Family showcase in Atlanta featuring Goodie MOB, Society of Soul, Witchdoctor, Eric "Sleepy" Brown and Outkast.

You can find Reko Trill moving the crowd as featured MC with The Kracker Nuttz on Saturday nights at Capitol Bar on Main Street.
