Houston's Top 10 Day-Drinking Bars

As our sister blog Eating...Our Words does, from time to time Rocks Off will be giving your our picks for the top taverns in various Houston-area neighborhoods. Of course, the lines can be porous, but here anything with a TABC license that cannot reasonably be considered either a restaurant, coffeehouse or live-music venue is fair game.

10. FIRKIN & PHOENIX PUB
Firkin & Phoenix is a great place to day-drink. Or late-morning drink, since it opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday for the pre-brunch crowd. Weekends are the best, with super-cheap deals on Bloody Marys, Bellinis, and Mimosas, but any day of day-drinking at Firkin is well worth it. There's always a game on, and between the pool tables, the jukebox, and the cold, cold beer, there's plenty to keep you entertained even if the rest of the world is still in bed.

9. THE BULL AND BEAR TAVERN
The Bull and Bear rocks when it comes to day-drinking, with everything you need to keep your beer needs in check. It opens at 11 a.m., which is also when freakin' happy hour starts. From the massive beer list to the monthly specials, you'd be hard-pressed to find a place more beer-friendly. The sports flow freely, with darts and pool tables available if you're not in the game-day spirit.

8. CHRISTIAN'S TAILGATE GRILL & BAR
This is a serious day-drinking place, just in case you haven't been here on a Sunday morning. Christian's Tailgate opens at the crack of dawn, with people sitting in there downing pitchers at the crack of dawn, too.

We won't judge. We've been right there along with them, drinking away the previous night's hangover, while downing those sweet burgers Christian's is known for. Just be careful that you don't end up doing whatever the people in the photo above have done, or you'll have to buy your liver flowers on Monday.

While the bickering is always entertaining, you guys nailed it with Alabama Ice House and Rudyards. I really miss the Ale House, though.

Fun stuff, Ms. Leicht. My old man opened his Market Street joint up at 07:00 Monday-Saturday and did brisk business before the oil bust took out his clientele. I don't drink but I populate my stories with neighborhood bars like these.

To chrisasmithe:

Since several of these joints predate the townhomes by like a decade, I'm gonna say nah. Also, you won't see a limo full of dude-bros/girls pull up to these joints either which is hte best indicator of a dbar *cough*pubfiction*cough*escobar*cough*.

But, hey, why don't you tell us which are the best day-drinking bars?

More like Top Ten Douchey Bro Dude Bars Filled With People Who Buy The Shitty Townhomes That Are Ruining Our Neighborhoods. Go back to the suburbs, Angela. We don't want you or those people here.

@chrisasmithe Alice's Tall Texan? Come on, dude. Be serious. That place is the exact opposite of a "Bro Dude" Bar. Same with Rudz. I don't think you've been to these places, honestly.

@chrisasmithe OK, I'm intrigued by your analysis: Are all the bars on here -- or even the majority -- really "Douchey Bro Dude Bars"? I eagerly await your response.

It's Angelica, for what it's worth. Perhaps you need some coffee this morning.

Sorry, I yawned so hard after the first three that I couldn't keep going. All of the go back to the suburbs comments remain. I don't know you Craig but I still suspect The Woodlands or its equivalent.

You are offended because you live in one of those new charmless things, don't you. Graduate from Whitelands High School?

@chrisasmithe I was born and raised and still reside inside the 610 loop so I know what a "Bro Douche" looks like, and you sir are a Bro Douche.....

@chrisasmithe I'm sorry -- I mistook you for someone who might have wanted to have an intelligent debate. My bad. I'll just move along.
