The Top Five Houston Music Videos of 2013

2. Featherface, "The Cosmic Draw"
Considering that last year's "I Saw Her Dancing" was a strong contender for Video of the Year, it should come as any surprise that Featherface placed high once again. "The Cosmic Draw" is a wonderful vid that explores a non-linear past and future of one young woman as seen through the eyes of her loving husband.

Snapshots of their life in random order reveal everything that wonderful and terrible about the reality of existence, as shows us how we can never realize the way love makes others see us. It's not as good as when they tried to melt a zombie's heart with ballet, but not much is.

1. Two Star Symphony, "The Ninth Level"
Jerry Ochoa is the sort of multi-talented artist that Houston can be very proud of. In addition to helping his three string fiends craft the one-of-a-kind classical music that is Two Star's output, he directed this fantastic ghostly tale full of strange hauntings and some fairly impressive special effects. I particularly like when the book on witch burnings comes to life. Little extra touches like that is the reason it's our best local music video of 2013.

Jef has a new story, a tale of headless strippers and The Rolling Stones, available now in Broken Mirrors, Fractured Minds. You can also connect with him on Facebook.

Now if Featherface's music was worth listening to.... oh, never mind, it's all about the presentation. I forgot.

@WhiteLightning In music videos it's not ALL a bout the presentation, but it is half about it. That's why I don't cover more rap videos. Standing in front of a place you like while you talk with your hands is not a compelling visual narrative. It's also why I never cover simple performance vids no matter how good the song is.

This is a magical medium, the music video. It's film where there are no words, only song. It's not a commercial, or a stand-in for live performance. It's meant to be unique. I thought these five did that the best this year. If you think someone did better, make sure you send them my way. I'm always looking for a good video.
