93.7 FM Now Marching to a New Beat

TheBeat-1231.jpg
As many of you now know, around noon today 93.7 FM ceased to become a classic-rock station -- good riddance, some say -- and flipped formats to hip-hop and R&B, rechristening itself "The Beat."

Thus far, according to 937thebeathouston.com, songs have included Sevyn Streeter and Chris Brown's "It Won't Stop," Slim Thug and Z-RO's "Summertime," Hustle Gang's "Memories Back Then," Drake and Rick Ross's "Hold On, We're Going Home" and Destiny's Child's "Soldier."

Rocks Off has a radio specialist now monitoring The Beat and will report our findings New Year's Day. Happy New Year!

I actually liked JC and the morning showgram. Im disappointed that they did this. Guess I'll be listening to 89.7 KACC a college radio station for my classic rock. Clear channel sucks!

This is not better.  The last thing we needed is yet ANOTHER station playing thug noise celebrates gangs, tattoos, degrading women and forcing everyone around you to hear how awesome the bass response is in your "my-job-is-my-credit" piece of crap where the rims are more valuable than the car.

Every week it gets harder and harder to find 12 good stations to set the pre-sets to.  Maybe I'll just settle on six and never use the second FM bank.

I vote for KACC from Alvin.  Especially good on days when you can get it without static.

Since we lost KTRU I only listen to KUHF for NPR, some sports talk (not 610), occasionally KPFT and my iPhone/iPod playlists. Everything else in Houston sucks especially all those clear channel music stations, they ruined radio as we used know it.

Houston radio just got even worse than it already was.

That said KKRW was living on borrowed time. Before moving to Austin, I avoided it in the morning (W&J's obnoxious hillbilly routine was incredibly off-putting, and I wouldn't be surprised if their morning ratings never recovered from the stigma). The afternoons with Steve Fixx were good though.

Chris Brown instead of the same 5 Led Zeppelin, 6 AC/DC & 3 Lynyrd Skynyrd songs on repeat? Oh yeah it can always get worse!

How does a station change turn into a racial tirade?........the monster within, smh

@dasmith241 Where did I mention race?  It's music that glorifies a LIFESTYLE that I don't believe in.

I only have 3 stations so you're doing great. I never called you a racist and the ethnicity of your family members doesnt restrict you from making insensitive comments. These record companies control the industry and they pay the artists and their content that they want to glorify.....cant blame a kid who is trying to better their financial situation for making music they want. Just relax and allow the freedom of speech and just teach your children thats its strictly entertainment and doesnt apply to their lifestyle. Is it ridiculous at times, yes, does it anger me, not at all because it doesnt apply to me. Just change the station and understand this is the world we live in and you're only a small piece of it, not the dictator. Understand that I agree with most of what you say about the music and its content but when it begins to anger you, you may label someone negatively that really doesnt deserve it.

@dasmith241 There must be something wrong with me, then.  Not that I'm racist.  My Mexican wife and daughter, and black niece and nephew, all got my back on that.  But that having to hear this every day - whether I want to or not - whenever my neighbor's daughter's boyfriend rolls into the driveway because it's apparently the only track he could afford to buy - makes my blood boil.

I prefer to believe it's because a) it's annoying, badly performed and badly recorded noise, and b) I happen to like and respect women, and find rap's entire attitude towards them to be offensive.

If you want to be "entertained", fine.  Just keep it in your car, and don't make me have to hear it when I'm in within the walls of my own home, or in my car with the windows rolled up.  And stop reducing the number of radio stations I can tolerate listening to.

I got my six - KPFT, KTSU, the Buzz, the Mix, KODA and the Eagle.  Wish I could get KACC, but I guess I live too far away.

You didnt have to mention it, your words implied it.....if you say it, own it, dont run from your words......but what's good about it, your second post was much more intelligent and something I could agree with.....bottom line is that its all entertainment and EVERYONE should see it as such.
