The Not So Fun Side of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2013

The Orange Stage
Heard lots of complaints from both audience and band members that the sound was super muddy. The Julie Ruin sounded great though. BRITTANIE SHEY

Technical Difficulties
Several sets were plagued with sound issues, from malfunctioning mikes to blown speakers, and some sound checks causing long delays. Rapper Killer Mike even had to cancel his performance because they couldn't get the sound to work, even if his set was to take place on a skate ramp. It wasn't bad to the point where I would ask for a refund, but noticeable regardless. MARCO TORRES

Dude in the Crowd at Lee Fields
He could barely stand up straight and kept leaning on everyone. After I asked him to respect my personal space he spent the rest of the show giving me the stinkeye. BRITTANIE SHEY

Need More Trash Cans
The fest is doing a lot of awesome things like having recycling bins and people walking around picking up cigarette butts, but there were multiple times when I wanted to throw something away and couldn't find a trash can, especially near the food tents. A few more around the festival grounds would be nice. CORY GARCIA

Hey, I'm working here!
The photo pits were extra small this year, or maybe there was just much more media than ever, but either way, shooting from the crowd was much more pleasant at times. Sure, I like to be friendly with my colleagues, but when I can taste the deodorant they are wearing, that's not cool. MARCO TORRES

Television
Super boring set. BRITTANIE SHEY

It'd be nice if they had screens/tvs/whatev at each stage (like FPSF, etc have) so that people standing in the back of the crowd could see more than tiny figures in the distance. During acts like Deltron 3030 it would've been cool to see a projection of the things happening on the stage.

Yeah, I agree with most of this. I still absolutely loved the fest but they changed so much for the worse. I don't get why you change a fest thats nearly perfect. Specially with the sound, that was pretty noticeable on multiple acts, you'd figure they'd have a much better sound system with the money they saved going with just one stage (also a bad decision, that was one of the things that made them special). Or maybe they just hired bad sound techs. Though I do completely 100% disagree with Television, they were fantastic. One of the best of the weekend easily.

and yet, i still wager it was a better value/experience than fpsf

Agreed on most counts!  We were commenting on the lack of trash cans all weekend!  I hate to litter, so I ended up carrying trash in my pockets all weekend until I spotted one.  And double shame on you Chi'lantro!  I've been singing your praises for years and was super let down with cold, bland food this year.

Could we maybe mention getting a couple new acts next year?  Glad that I finally saw Slayer and a few others, but my husband has been going for 7 years and the line up is getting a bit repetative for him.

No double stages, only 2 sets of bathrooms, 3 places to get your drink on, made for a much less enjoyable FFF Fest.

I'm mostly pissed that I now have to spend money to go to Untapped this weekend since FFF screwed The Walkmen over so badly on Friday. Hamilton's vocals were too low for the first 2 songs and they only allowed them to play ~20 minutes. I'm still all kinds of annoyed, and I'm sure they are too.

Blue stage got their sound together by the time RJD2 hit. Everything before that was awful

I agree with every bit of this article *except* for the Television slam. They ruled.
