Top Five Bands You Need to Get Over Already

Thanks to social media, our culture now moves at the speed of light. Your 15 minutes of fame is now closer to fifteen seconds. Look at all the internet memes you loved last year that are completely played out now. Hell, even a hit song only has about a month of mileage; notice how quickly we all got over Daft Punk this summer.

Overstaying your welcome is no longer tolerated, something social media makes all too apparent. As someone who spends a lot of time on Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook, I know what I'm getting sick of seeing very quickly, especially when it comes to music.

So it's even more baffling and annoying when some acts just don't go away. Here are five I just keep seeing and seeing and seeing to the point where I'm going to pull my hair out if people don't just get over them already.

5. Death Grips
Are we over this yet? Death Grips' music has gotten increasingly bad as time has gone and their "performance art," if you can call it that, has verged into utter idiocy, as I've previously discussed. At first it looked like rebellion, but on further inspection it's just some guys determined to embarrass themselves as publicly as possible.

It's time to stop glorifying that, whether it's an underground rap group like Death Grips or a mainstream pop star like Miley Cyrus, and it's time to move on from what was a poor excuse for a hype band to begin with. There are better artists out there who were doing this sound before Death Grips started anyway.

4. Odd Future
Odd Future and their front man of sorts, Tyler the Creator, hit hard in 2011 with a series of singles that captured a new, more youthful, more honest brand of hip-hop we weren't used to hearing in the mainstream.

Then they degenerated into offensive jokes and repetiton, both in their subject matter and their beats. You could almost say they became exactly what they were a refreshing change from to begin with. What's the difference between Tyler and Lil Wayne at this point? Different pop-culture references? It's played.

3. Brand New
Brand New was always a step above the majority of the mainstream emo scene of the early 2000s and has transitioned gracefully into a darker form of indie-rock over their last two albums. That being said, checking Tumblr you'd think that a) their 2003 album Deja Entendu came out last week, and b) they had released new music since 2009.

For a band whose last album was fairly middling that hasn't been active in four years, it's shocking how remarkably present they are. But even worse, it's their material from ten years ago that won't go away! It's time to put the nail in the coffin for Deja Entendu, at least until Brand New bothers to release some new material.

List continues on the next page.

dude...jeff buckley?...are you really pissing on a grave?  why not attack the living?...i think van morrison would like a little vitriole thrown at astral weeks - hell, its older than your sniveling, snot-nosed, pretentious hipster wanna-be ass.  and how about  the white album? - john and george are dead so shouldn't it get at least a half-mention?  why not take a run at jack white, or maybe neko case, i still like her but maybe i'd be cooler if i didn't.  For your next vapid demons ration of self-indulgence could you tell me if i should get over emmure, grimes, and knife party?...because, ya'know, i just wanne be cool - like you.

i feel like this article is pretty contradictory in itself. if i am not mistaken, you set out to make the point how social media has interfered with the "shelf-life" of pop-culture & media, yet you choose a band/artist such as "Brand New" on your list for standing the test of time, and their works celebrated on such platforms for years. also, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT! Brand New, alike Modest Mouse, another band you decided to list, are but TWO of the very FEW bands that have little to ANY social media SELF-presence or SELF-promotion. two things you would have found out real fast if you actually researched before writing your very misrepresented article. what you actually seem to be referring to is fan worship, or cult following; it appears that this is more of a question of personal taste and users YOU specifically choose to follow and what YOU are PERSONALLY "sick of" and not necessarily what is "trending" via social media.

wow, and you get oaid to come up with this shit? Modest Mouse and Buckley? really? How about Linkin Park, Creed, Nickelback, Imagine Dragons (yes the band that is totally big right now) and RHCP(blasphemy i know)...pay me HP!!!

Terrible list. There are faaaar worse overhyped bands/artists out there... And who the fuck hates on Jeff Buckley?

So let me get this straight: Creed = good, Jeff Buckley = bad? Jesus Christ. Please donate your ears to someone who will use them properly.

So a band has to keep having "hits" to deserve to stay around?!

This list is absurd. Modest mouse has more than one album, deja entendu stands the test of time as does Grace. Do you just stop listening to music once it's been around for a certain amount of time? It's fine not to like stuff but this is tryhardy, dude.

Why does anyone need to get over a band simply because they haven't recorded recently? Beethoven hasn't composed anything in at least 186 years, but he still has a following. I guess they're all misguided too?

Dude, you could just follow cooler people on social media. You don't have to write an article about it.

Who the hell still talks about Brand New? Did you start writing this article in 2008? I haven't heard that name in years.

Also, putting Jeff Buckley in your list is downright shameful. His music has absolutely held up.

Most off-base HP piece I've ever read. The Buckley thing is ridiculous (and note there are two studio records, not one). I was a staunch Odd Future naysayer, but Tyler's "Wolf" record is rock solid.

Jeff Buckley's music has stood the test of time IMHO.

"Oh hey, since we're cool, we can tell you what to listen to and what to stay away from you philistines!"  HP almost fooled me into thinking they were respectable for awhile there.  I completely agree with Unclelijah of the 1000 artists to chose from you picked these?! No one really "likes" them but no one is listening to them either.

Tool should be on this list; deadmau5, skillrex, or well over half the shit bands you fools write about on a weekly basis.
