Murder By Death
Fitzgerald's, September 21

Singer Adam Turla's whiskey-soaked baritone is the backbone of MBD's sound. It's an intimate, expressive voice, particularly well-suited to plaintive blues ballads and inebriated shoutalongs. The related (and relatable) themes of drinking and depressiontwist through the band's catalogue, and both feature prominently on the band's latest album Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon -- anchored, as always, by that voice. With Larry and His Flask and Rodeo Queen. NATHAN SMITH

Man Man
Fitzgerald's, September 22

Man Man skirts some fairly fringe territory to arrive at a place of pure fun. The Philadelphia duo is back in stores with its fifth album of experimental pop and surrealist word-slinging, On Oni Pond, its first since 2011's Life Fantastic. Replete with reggae grooves, electro flourishes and a dash of Tom Waits' junkman poetry, On Oni Pond would pass the smell test at Oingo Boingo's dead-man's party, too. Nothing wrong with that at all. With Xenia Rubios. CHRIS GRAY

Mickey Avalon: Has the former wild child of trash-pop grown up a little with last year's long-delayed sophomore LP Loaded? Don't count on it. (Warehouse Live Studio, September 20)

Tritonal: Super-chill Austin trance duo, now pumping the Metamorphic 1 EP (first in a trilogy), just saw their Tritonia podcast enter iTunes' Top 10 most downloaded. Not bad. (Stereo Live, September 21)

Glenn Tilbrook: Singer-songwriter behind classic Squeeze melodies like "Tempted," "Up the Junction" and "Black Coffee In Bed" goes where the acoustics are best. (Dosey Doe, September 21)

Wood & Wire: Buzz is growing behind young Austin acoustic/bluegrass quartet. (McGonigel's Mucky Duck, September 21)

It may not be cool or whatnot, but Five Iron Frenzy at the House of Blues tomorrow night should be an outstanding show...if you're still into ska.
