Five Houston Concerts You Should Avoid This Fall

GWAR
Warehouse Live, October 24
I remember once talking to a friend of mine who worked security around town, and he told me about all the extra hours he had to put in GWAR-proofing a venue for one of their Houston shows. (It may have been House of Blues, but doesn't really matter.) All the plastic sheeting he and his colleagues had to put down so all the band's fake fluids don't ruin the venue's equipment -- even if GWAR doesn't use real blood, vomit, etc., it's still disgusting.

And apart from that, their whole sex-crazed space-metal mythology might be appealing to any 14-year-old boy, but I just find that sort of thing a little sad today. I mean, GWAR has been doing this a long time. Of course the show will probably sell out, to mostly adults, which I find infinitely sadder. CHRIS GRAY

Explaining Selena Gomez's popularity boils down to how little she did running around in a bra as the moral compass of Spring Breakers. Or something. Otherwise she's just an annoying persona stamped with Disney pomp and circumstance.

Is it certain you might lose your head hearing some of her tunes? Very. "Love You Like a Love Song" is painful, and "Come & Get It" has been beaten into the ground throughout the summer. The far better show might be trying to figure out the craziest Selena Gomez fan going into Toyota Center. BRANDON CALDWELL

Ha. Is this a good place to sell my ticket for Imagine Dragons?

Gwar isn't cool any more, so now we can't go to see them. Maybe I could instead go to Drake, because that's gonna be a heckuva show. And I can't decide whether to see Imagine Dragons--can you please write a tie-breaker article. Thanks.

Did I accidentally click end up on a middle school newspaper website? Top notch work, young journalists!

If you've never seen GWAR in concert, you are missing a life event. The rest should totally be skipped though.

I saw Imagine Dragons at The Hangout Beach, Music and Arts Festival a few months ago, and they rocked it. However, I wouldn't pay full price to see them at the Woodlands.

im not a big fan of any of these bands but telling people they should skip the show is bullshit.

Selena Gomez is a person? GTFO! I thought she was a cartoon girl with a big ol' five head. Jokes aside, good article. If I were a cop--joke in and of itself--I would arrest anyone my age, (we'll just say over 25) at any of these shows. These "acts" are kinda like intimate unmentionables. If you don't want to admit to it, maybe you shouldn't be doing it--or paying money to watch it.

I'm seeing Imagine Dragons and I don't give a shit who puts them on what list, I'm an individual and I do what I like! Boom!

Seriously, and as the comment on the webpage says, the top concerts to see list had Imagine Dragons on it... I get that two different people wrote the suggestions but at least acknowledge it. Damn.

A GWAR show right before Halloween and you're saying skip it? I miss the days when the HP had good concert reviewers.

"I'm curious to see the progression Imagine Dragons has made as artists now that their song "Radioactive" has blown up the entire radio. It's literally on every station ever, even hip-hop stations, and such a far cry from where they were just a few months ago: House of Blues. Cynthia Woods is where they'll be bangin' all those drums this time around, and I wonder if it'll translate or if all the fame and the bigger venue will cause them to lose a bit of sparkle. I have to hope it's the former."

Good job, team.

@Geoff Widmier I recently saw Imagine Dragons at a festival setting in Philadelphia and while I heard their show a few months ago in Houston was spot on, I was still a bit skeptical. Needless to say, they were awesome. They even sampled a song from Cold War Kids (whom I love). This work as a tie-breaker?

@Huey That was my opinion on Imagine Dragons right there. The above opinion (Selena's) I disagree with, but that's kinda the whole point, I guess. I don't think any of the writers are streamlined on their opinions, nor should they be, or this blog would be way boring and we'd all be fighting over the same concerts. :)

@Huey What? Are you telling me the writers don't really believe what they write and only produce these cheap articles to chum for hits? Say it aint so.

@annaleicht @Huey  Sometimes I don't like the hit pop songs on the radio, but I can see why they're hits. "Radioactive", though, is a song whose popularity I just don't get. Is it solely because of the dubsteppy wah-wah beat? Because the chorus of the song is so whiny and lacking in anything resembling a hook that I'm baffled by its popularity.

Exactly, because I reviewed Fall Out Boy earlier this year and they killed it. It's an unpopular opinion (I mean, read above statements as well as previous statements), but it's MY opinion.
