HPMA Showcase Spotlight: FLCON FCKER, "I * Often * Wear * Feathers * and * Glitter"

In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.

To whom are we speaking? What are you nominated for?
I am not a band. You are speaking to FLCON FCKER aka Khal Falco aka Lil' Feezy, aka the Notorious F.U.C. I am nominated for Best Electronic Act.

Please list all of your regular band members and what instruments they play.
It's just me. I spend a lot of time writing music but even more time creating dynamic, flexible interfaces for my performs. It's a tedious process, and open-source elements often crash mid-performance, but this approach gives me more control than is usually afforded to, or expected from, electronic musicians.

Describe yourself in four to seven words.
I * often * wear * feathers * and * glitter.

Who is your single biggest musical influence and why?
I can't name a single person/band/etc. as my biggest musical influence. We live in a world where every line is blurred and all things are broader, much more multidisciplinary versions of what they used to be years ago. My influences are a jumbled mess of sci-fi movies, iconic synthesizer celebrities, hip-hop and/or techno beats, online vids, and, most recently, episodes of Paranormal Witness.

I do, however, receive a lot of energy and inspiration from my contemporaries in the city (Josiah Gabriel, Eric Todd, Android Genius, GR8oh8, and more). We keep each other motivated, share production tips, and argue endlessly about them.

What recordings (if any) do you have readily available?
If you've found my music online in any way, you're listening to a live recording. I plan to release a small EP titled Weird Pyramids, then a follow up EP, OtherWorld and More Shitty Sci-Fi. Weird Pyramids is scheduled for a late-August release and OtherWorld and More Shitty Sci-Fi will be out mid-September.

Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for?
Last year (2012) I was nominated for, and won, the "Best Electronic Act" category. Thanks, Houston!

Where and how often do you perform (publicly) around Houston?
I've mostly played venues in the Downtown, Montrose and Heights areas, but I've started performing in Austin, Louisiana and have national dates forthcoming. The booking requests have become more frequent. I try to keep my Web site updated with the latest dates, but it's difficult since I'm also determined to play new material every show.

Not only does this make it extremely unlikely to hear a FLCON FCKER song exactly the same way twice, I also premiere new tracks every performance. This means the calendar gets overlooked on occasion. :-/

What is the next step for you?
This project has always been about exploring new possibilities for experiencing electronic music live. The cost of creating engaging projections or complex interactive compositions is no longer prohibitive. The online open-source community is huge and ready to help. Also, living in Houston affords one the luxury of being able to tap into a large community of talented artists and equally impressive engineers and scientists. I've been collaborating and sharing ideas with local artists and groups hoping to realize the original goal.

Erick Calderon of Light Art Interactive and I hold endless brainstorming sessions about creating unique visual experiences for my sets and for performances in general. I'm also developing an analog synthesizer with local tech-art collective {exurb) to raise money for their studio space. I've already started performing in front of projections created from footage generated from the audience in real-time. I'm hoping to have something similar up at the HPMA showcase.

Finish this sentence: "Houston music is..."
Houston music is a rough, almost endless grind for artists and not for the faint-of-heart spectator.
