Top 10 Bars, Clubs & Ice Houses On the West Side
As our sister blog Eating... Our Words does, from time to time Rocks Off will be giving your our picks for the top taverns in various Houston-area neighborhoods. Of course, the lines can be porous, but here anything with a TABC license that cannot reasonably be considered either a restaurant, coffeehouse or live-music venue is fair game.
10. YARD HOUSE
I know, I know. It's not places like these that normally top our lists, but just give Yard House a chance. There's a reason why the bar stools are always full, despite the massive size of that beer-heavy bar. It's because this place is actually pretty rad.
Yes, it's uber-corporate and somewhat unnecessarily upscale for a place that sells some pretty awesome beers by the yard (hence the name), but the place has anywhere from 130 to 250 beers on tap at a time, ranging from crafts and imports to specialty ales and lagers, so it's okay to sell out to the man on this one.
There's also a full bar and a huge range of ciders and beer alternatives, which is way sweet for the folks who can't (or won't) tolerate that whole -- beer has gluten -- thing. Not only that, but they've got a pretty sweet soundtrack to down that beer to, playing mainly classic rock throughout the huge bar area and dining room. Throw in the fact there are truffle fries on the super-extensive menu, and it's virtually beertopia.

9. BIG JOHN'S ICE HOUSE
Bars in strip centers are usually awesome, and Big John's is no exception. Sitting on the corner of Dairy Ashford and Briar Forest, this place is right in the heart of the energy corridor. Don't let that stop you, though. It's not all suits and spillover from the man.
Pull up a sweet wooden bench, order yourself a Kitty's Bloody Mary, and situate yourself next to whomever you like. There are Harley types, the after-work folks, and the regulars, all hangin' in unpretentious harmony. They might even play The Doors if ya ask nicely.

8. ASHFORD PUB
It's a legit Irish pub with legit Irish owners, in a very non-Irish part of the world. What could be better than that? Not much, unless you throw in some free food. Oh wait, they have that too.
It's a total hole in the wall, with dirt-cheap drinks, rad bartenders, and a better selection of beers than you'll find most places on the west side. Like, there's some 20 flippin' beers on tap, which for a neighborhood bar, dare I say, is awesome shit.
