HPMA Showcase Spotlight: The Manichean, "Overtly Dramatic Narrative Rock"
In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.
Please list all of your regular band members and what instruments they play.
Cory Sinclair, vocals; Justice Tirapelli-Jamail, guitar; Sean Spiller, guitar; Ash BigCash, bass); Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail, drums)
Who is your single biggest musical influence and why?
The scores written and performed by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis: because it is some of the most beautiful music I will ever hear in my life. -- Justice Tirapelli-Jamail
Deftones: because theirs is the first music that stirred the fire that became the beast I now chase with our music. -- CS
What recordings (if any) do you have readily available?
Our releases, from most recent to least, include LOVERS (2012, CD); "The Swan" 7" (2012); Sakura (2011, digital); Lacerus Rising (2010, digital); Whispers EP (CD).
Each of these os available for digital download at themanichean.bandcamp.com. LOVERS, The Swan 7", and Whispers EP are available physically through the same site or at Cactus Music, Heights Vinyl, Sig's Lagoon, Vinyl Edge, Sound Exchange, and Soundwaves.
Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for?
Best New Act, Best Progressive Rock (2010); Best Indie/Alternative (2011); Best Drummer, Dylan Jamail (2012).
Where and how often do you perform (publicly) around Houston?
We just finished our second annual, one-night-only performance of our album LOVERS, in full, at the Alley Theatre. When not preparing for such a large spectacle we perform at Fitzgerald's, Walters, AvantGarden, and recently at Warehouse Live for our release of LOVERS.
We enjoy performing smaller, stripped-down acoustic sets at La Carafe every so often as well. We perform in Houston every few months. -- JTJ
What is the next step for your band?
We'll be focusing our efforts on three main areas over the course of the next year. Specifically, a much more rigorous touring schedule, both nationally and abroad, an increase in performances in and around Houston, and the start of our work on our next release, an EP which will stand as Chapter 2 of 3 in our Whispers saga. -- JTJ
Finish this sentence: "Houston music is..."
"...like Houston weather: too hot for Austin." -- CS
"...Zealous." -- JTJ
