HPMA Showcase Spotlight: Jealous Creatures, "Professional Goofballs Who Make Rock Music"
In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.
Please list all of your regular band members and what instruments they play.
Sarah Hirsch, rhythm guitar and vocals; Ian Hlavacek, lead guitar; Meghan Anderson, bass; Josh Barry, drums.
Who is your single biggest musical influence and why?
Tom Petty. He's a big influence as far as songwriting, sound, and the recording process go, and the choices he and his band have made in regards to controlling their own music have definitely had an impact on us in how we think about the music industry.
As an aside, when I was really little, I thought the band name was "Tom Danger and the Deadly Hearts," and I loved watching all their music videos because they were really weird and dreamlike. Also, his singing voice and his talking voice are completely different from one another, and that's how my voice is, too!
What recordings do you have readily available?
- Bazooka, 2013 -- available online at Bandcamp, iTunes, and AmazonMP3 and in the real world at Cactus Music, Sound Exchange, Sig's Lagoon, and Heights Vinyl.
- Little Heaven Big Sky, 2011 -- available online at Bandcamp, iTunes, and AmazonMP3 and in the real world at Cactus Music.
- Coffee Stains EP, 2011 -- available online at Bandcamp, iTunes, and AmazonMP3.
Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for?
This is a first for us as a band, although Josh has been nominated previously for other music projects.
