Announcing the Houston Music Hall of Fame

Houston has an odd way of honoring its heroes - which is to say often that's no way at all. Consider that for a long time the Houston Sports Hall of Fame resided in the basement of a furniture store. Any sort of Houston Music Hall of Fame doesn't exist at all. Until now.

Now, we're not going to presume that music has quite the same hold on Houston's civic imagination as sports, but for some of us it does. So in honor of the Houston Press Music Awards' 25th year -- by the way, tickets for our silver-anniversary showcase this Sunday are still only $10 through HPMusicAwards.com -- the Houston Press has decided to create our own Houston Music Hall of Fame.

But a hall of fame wouldn't be much without a few worthy candidates to induct, so we chose ten artists we think represent Houston's multifaceted music scene to the world at large quite proudly indeed. But for our first class, we wanted performers who are not only legendary already, but still out there actively adding to their own legacies. (We also selected a "Ring of Honor," featuring 25 notable talents who have gone on before them.)

You can read all about all ten, whose names are below, in this week's cover story, "Ten the Hard Way."

  • YOLANDA ADAMS
  • JEWEL BROWN
  • GETO BOYS
  • LA MAFIA
  • LOS SKARNALES
  • MYDOLLS
  • J. PAUL JR. & THE ZYDECO NUBREEDS
  • JOE SAMPLE
  • GENE WATSON
  • ZZ TOP

Congratulations to each and every one. Honorees will be inducted into the brand-new HMHOF at our silver-anniversary Music Awards ceremony on Tuesday, August 6 at Warehouse Live. Admission is free, but we do ask that you RSVP. We hope you can join us too.
