A Flock of Seagulls
Concert Pub North, May 31

Ever heard of a little ditty known as "I Ran (So Far Away)"? You might remember it from the days that it ran across the screen of MTV literally every ten minutes, setting a record for number of video plays. And even if you don't remember the music from A Flock of Seagulls, who in their right mind could forget that glorious hair?

Its swooping, gloriously golden tendrils defined an era. Those guys -- and that hair -- are still around, and they've even recorded a cover of Madonna's "This Used to Be My Playground." Maybe if you're lucky, they'll bust it out for you. ANGELICA LEICHT

Accordion Kings & Queens Festival
Miller Outdoor Theatre, June 1

Although Texas Folklife Resources' Accordion Kings & Queens Festival is approaching its silver anniversary next year, this year's celebration of all things squeezebox is no dress rehearsal. As usual, it highlights every major type of Texas music where the accordion figures as an essential instrument: zydeco (Rosie Ledet & the Zydeco Playboys); conjunto (Hometown Boys); and polkas and such (the Czechaholics).

And not be missed are the finals of TFR's annual "Big Squeeze" competition, which pits four of Texas' top under-18 squeezers against each other for a prize package worth more than $4,000, while backed by Houston's own ultra-versatile Avizo. Free reserved-seating tickets will available at the Miller box office the day of the show. Free. CHRIS GRAY

Killswitch Engage
House of Blues, June 1

Known widely as one of metalcore's founding bands, Killswitch Engage formed thanks to the dissolution of Overcast and Aftershock in the late '90s, and have been growling, screaming, and (sometimes) singing their way to critical acclaim ever since. MTV even named them the greatest metal band of all time, and their most recent album Disarm the Descent has been labeled as "nothing short of amazing." With Miss May I and Darkest Hour. Too bad it's not that lineup of Flock of Seagulls anymore. Still a great show. I saw them at Surfside Sally's many, many years ago.

@BobbyFreshpants No way I'm going to see a band that would be outclassed by the average county fair, and ironically where they play regularly these days. 30 years on, it's a dire ca$h in..
