Houston's Wild Moccasins have been hand-picked by Of Montreal to be the main support act on their Athens-based friends' three-week spring U.S. theater tour, New West Records announced Thursday.

The two indie-pop bands have developed a similar sound -- drawing on elements of psychedelic '60s pop and '80s New Wave, with some folk and R&B accents -- and a genuine comradeship over the past few years. The Moccasins have opened Of Montreal's past several Houston shows, as well as the hometown release of the Athens band's most recent album, Paralytic Stalks, last year.

"All of us are really excited about the opportunity, and can't wait to get back on the road," the Moccasins' Zahira Gutierrez told Rocks Off via email.

The band has also recently played shows with Yip Deceiver and James Husband, both of which feature members of Of Montreal, shows that went "really well," Gutierrez says.

"We just all got along very well and it made sense to keep playing more shows together, so they asked us to come on tour with them," she added.

The Moccasins are still working on the much-expected "official" sophomore album to follow up 2011's Skin Collision Past, which was reissued by New West after the band's 2010 self-release became locally popular. (The reissue includes 2009 debut EP Microscopic Metronomes.)

In the interim, they released a 7" single late last year, "Gag Reflections" backed with a cover of the B-52's "Summer of Love."

Gutierrez says the band s about 11 songs into the new album at this point. The recording is going "great!", she adds, and says the band expects to have it out before the fall. Houston Beatles expert Kevin Ryan, who has also worked with Sarah Sharp and the Southern Backtones, is producing.

The tour opens in Miami on May 3 and runs through May 24 in Greensboro, N.C. Houston is not on the itinerary, but the Moccasins have shows scheduled for May 6 at Austin's Mohawk and May 7 at El Paso's Tricky Falls. Other venues include Slim's in San Francisco, Baton Rouge's Varsity Theater and Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg.

The group's most recent Houston show was March 12 at Walters with the Ducktails and Yip Deciever. Rocks Off last caught up with them in Februrary, where we noticed "Loaded with cheery enthusiasm, the Moccasins have created a sound that begs you to dance along."
