2013 marks the first year that the Austin City Limits Music Festival -- Texas' other large outdoor music festival, never to be confused with Houston's own Free Press Summer Fest -- expands to two consecutive weekends with identical lineups. At this point the lineup for the festival, scheduled for October 4-6 and October 11-13, is weeks away from being announced.

ACL 2013: What's Next For Texas' Other Big Music Festival?

The annual ACL announcement is always a big deal for Texas festival-heads. Granted, it's not as rich in flavorful band reunions and bearded, tattooed folk like Fun Fun Fun Fest, or weirdo corporate gigs like SXSW, but what it does offer is mainstream spectacle.

Last year's Iggy & the Stooges set was probably as "dangerous" as ACL has ever ventured, beyond that one time when it scheduled Wilco up against My Morning Jacket in 2007.

If Bruce Springsteen and his fleet aren't back in hibernation by October, they could be a great get too. Houston didn't even get a date with the Boss this past year, so yeah.

Having major musical acts tethered to Austin for two weeks straight would also be grand for cities like Houston, Dallas and New Orleans, and pretty much most of the Southwest.

Daft Punk is every ACL fanboy's wet dream, since the Internet was "cheated" out of a surprise gig in front of the state capitol during SXSW that was never ever going to happen, ever. Alas, the robots have already denied over and over again that they will be playing any shows in 2013.

Nobody listens, though.

And please, no more Jack White appearances for at least three years, or when his EDM project is fully functional.

Over at the Spacelab festival site, people are asking for everyone from 311 to Nine Inch Nails to play ACL. Nearly everyone is begging for Mumford And Sons and Bon Iver, if that tells you anything about the board's granola-tivity.

Let's indulge in some more speculation, shall we?

i can promise Thom's band Atoms for Peace will be at ACL.  Look at the Atoms for peace Tour compared to the ACL dates - after chicago, they do one show in austin (first ACL weekend) head off for a quick show in mexico, then back to austin for 2nd ACL weekend before heading out west.  Radiohead did this for the King of Limbs tour:  Did a show in at Coachella, down to mexico for a few shows back to Coachella for weekend #2.  Can't wait for single day tickets for this one.

Lollapalooza lineup and ACL lineup usually share a lot of bands. It wouldn't be surprising to see at least two of the headliners from Lolla: The Cure, Mumford and Sons, The Killers, Nine Inch Nails or Phoenix. Then add one electronic (Steve Aoki from Lollapalooza too), one hip-hop (Jay-Z? he is touring), one country (Jack Ingram? touring too) and one old band that had a really successful album 20-30 years ago but that hasn't released anything new/good since then (Lynyrd Skynyrd or ZZ-Top? both of them are on tour, and both of them have a gap of dates between September 21st and October 20th)

Is The Cure a possibility? I read it somewhere that someone leaked them for ACL... Personally I have no clue, but, come on...that would be amazing.

Phoenix is doing an ACL taping on May 6 so they are likely for ACL. They never book the same acts 2 years in a row, so Lumineers is not playing, especially with a show at the new amphitheater. Depeche Mode and Atoms for Peace are happening.

I always joke the year Phish, The Strokes & Eagles co-headlined is the year the festival came dangerously close to imploding on itself.

@kevan.irsch I'd say Depeche Mode is not an option. They are singing in Vegas on 10/06 that is ACL date.

@Bru Sant Torrente-Tejano Au contraire! Jimmy Buffet as headliner is perfect for Houstonians who attend ACL, because it means we can get an early start on our 3-hour drive back home on Sunday night.
