John Egan is back at the Big Easy after his trip to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, where he advanced to the semifinal round of 28 -- meaning that by that reckoning, Egan is one of the Top 30 solo bluesmen in the world. "Perhaps I was too edgy for the finals?" Egan quipped on Facebook. "All in all it was a great trip and a lot of fun." He won't be too edgy for his year-old Monday-night residency, which Egan resumed last Monday and, he recently told us, has already allowed him to whip up a new batch of songs to go along with the ones on last year's excellent Phantoms. That 1 Guy is the one-man-band project of the hellaciously gifted and classically trained Mike Silverman, who takes his zany musical cues from the likes of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. His engrossing live shows feature his homemade Magic Pipe, Magic Boot, and Magic Saw, three contraptions that allow Silverman to put on a live show that should rightfully take four guys to make happen. Ra Ra Riot is the big indie name upstairs, but Unknown Mortal Orchestra is the shagadelic sleeper downstairs. The psych trio is the creation of New Zealand native Ruban Nielson after the untimely demise of his previous band the Mint Chicks, the indie-experimental crew once memorably described as "shitgaze." Locked and loaded after taking time off to have a baby with hubby Carey Hart, pop star P!nk is now on tour behind last fall's The Truth About Love. Her image over the past decade and a half has combined Wendy O. Williams and Janis Joplin to make a foot-stomping, snarling sugary confection.
