The 5 Best Onstage Band Pranks
You might think that it's a little bit early for April Fool's, but pranks go on between musicians and bands year-round. Given that musicians are an immature, jocular sort, tied inherently to an adolescent dream of being a rock star, it should be no surprise that they get into all kinds of crazy inside jokes. We probably don't even get to see the half of it, but when we do it's always equal parts hilarious and baffling.

We may be outside the longstanding jokes between band members, but some things are just laughable on their face, and those are the ones we can all enjoy. Though hundreds probably go on year-round, these are some of the best we've ever heard about, recently or not-so-recently.
Metallica blows up their own stage
From Metallica's Cunning Stunts DVD, this one was a bit of a prank on the fans in the crowd and watching at home. It is partially a reference to the incident a few years earlier when singer James Hetfield was burned upon stepping into some onstage pyro. But after the initial "man-on-fire" runs through, all hell breaks loose. As an aside, this is the best way to separate a main set and an encore that we've ever seen.
Touche Amore shows up naked during Thursday's set
While this tour could be seen as one generation of post-hardcore passing the torch to the next, the next generation saw it as an opportunity to have some fun at the expense of their elders. Halfway through a performance of Thursday's "Jet Black New Year," a pretty serious song by all accounts, Touche Amore shows up to lighten the mood.

Unfortunately for us, we can only read Al Kooper's account of this momentous tour, because it sounds absolutely hilarious. While touring together, the two bands found themselves engaged in a lengthy prank war, each side upping the ante night after night.
Taylor Swift goes KISS on Keith Urban
Do we all agree that Taylor Swift takes herself too seriously and writes too many cliched break-up songs? Okay, great. Well, at least she had enough of a sense of humor to do this. Keith Urban, who also apparently does things outside of American Idol, was about to play his song "Kiss a Girl," but thankfully for all of us, Taylor intervened, making her entire existence worthwhile.
Rascal Flatts and a big bird get Darius Rucker
Don't ask me why, but apparently country stars are really good at this pranking business. Maybe helps give some life to all the sterile country-pop going on these days. Anyway, in this one, Rascal Flatts decided to lead a herd of goats into Darius Rucker's dressing room while Rucker was onstage. But that wasn't enough, so they also had a big bird sports mascot come out on stage to dance and duet with the former Blowfish.
