Wednesday morning, Live Nation announced that British superstar Elton John and his band will perform at Toyota Center on Thursday, March 28.

This is good news, because Rocks Off has been in a Tumbleweed Connection phase anyhow, not that we're all that likely to hear "Ballad of a Well-Known Gun," "Country Comfort" or "Burn Down the Mission."

Still, there are others. John's five-decade tip sheet includes 35 gold and 25 platinum albums, 29 No. 1 singles, five Grammy awards and a staggering 250 million-plus albums sold worldwide. Recently he has been demonstrating again just how wide he can range.

John's collaboration with country/R&B pianist and longtime friend Leon Russell, The Union, was released in 2010, and last year (with John's full endorsement) Australian EDM duo Pnau went to work on several of his mid-'70s works to produce the collage-like album Good Morning to the Night.

This will be one of some 3,000 concerts John, now 65, has performed since 1969. He was most recently in Houston in March 2009 in a dueling-piano tandem with Billy Joel, in a set that included the elegiac "Funeral For a Friend," "Levon," "Tiny Dancer," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," '80s hit "I'm Still Standing" and concluded with mass singalong "Crocodile Rock."

"Any hipster sullenly bemoaning that the only radio they like involves Thom Yorke would have been pummeled in a maelstrom of suburban fists of fury," wrote Rocks Off's Bob Ruggiero.

Tickets start at $39, grow considerably in price and go on sale 10 a.m. Friday, February 8 at www.houstontoyotacenter.com, by phone at 1-866-4-HOUTIX or at most Houston-area Randall's stores.
