Hoffle Stoff Awaffogus... Yes, Weed Was Involved In the Name

It's a well-known fact that most band names are gobbledygook, but here at Rocks Off we're trying hard to find meaning in the oddest monikers.

I knew nothing about Hoffle Stoff Awaffogus when I decided to write about them. All I knew was that their name came gutterballing into my eye sockets from the upcoming concert listings and I had to find out why in the name of Stingray Sam's asking stick someone would call their band a name that would be more at place in some Midwestern extreme eating competition. I had to, you understand?

So I fired off my usual vaguely threatening and badly misspelled questions on the subject at their Facebook account and sought what I could glean. Though the band doesn't seem all that interested in trying to have fancy things like a Web site, music players, contact info, and the like, you can get a pretty good sense of them on YouTube, where their presence is pretty deep.

It's two guys, two girls, and what seems like a whole lot of yelling. According to the videos I've posted here, the band seems to be most interested in playing punk rock for thirty seconds while shouting complete incoherence. Singer Daphne Gonzalez helpfully announce the names of each song and maybe a little bit of what they're about, such a dedicating a tune to people watching McDonald's commercials.

But then, it's like one of those cars that you pull back to wind up and then let go to smash into your baby brother's carefully constructed Duplo structure. Hoffle Stoff Awaffogus is what a vice-squad raid would sound like if it had a melody. Got to hand it to them, though. They've got the energy of ten other bands.

I honestly wasn't expecting a reply, but drummer Jesse Augustine took five minutes to send me this.

I came up with the name about five years ago... While in my other project Last Rosary (at the time), I would ask people at shows to attempt to pronounce it at first catch. Like a game. In January 2011 we formed and decided on it as our permanent band name, seeing that we wanted to promote youth highly through words and tones in this project.

So, when anyone asks what Hoffle Stoff Awaffogus means, I simply tell them "youth and freedom" being that it's not a language, and was made up as something for small laughs while on generous doses of tetrahydrocannabinol.

Normally I would seek for deeper meaning at this point of the column, but Augustine tops Kurt Vonnegut in silly words with deep meaning with his little toke-fueled tongue twister. Let's let that lie.

FINAL DEFINITION

Hoffle Stoff Awaffogus (n): 1. A figment of a stoner's mind. 2. Youth and freedom. 3. A Midwestern extreme-eating competition.

Hoffle Stoff Awaffogus plays with Fire From the Gods, Rahab the Monster, Against the Dark, and Dysmetria Saturday at Dean's on Main, 316 Main, facebook.com/deansonmain.

Jef with one F, thanks for writing about the HoffStoffAwaff - I get to see punk bands on the regular and they are one of my favorites. Looking at what I have just typed, one wonders if you sought them out so you could go all Wheel of Fortune and try to buy an F from them.

Hmm...as it turns out, I think this vid is from the one time I've seen them.
