15 Notable Houston Concerts of 2012

Categories: Live Shots

As we look back over 2012 this week, it is now time to revisit some of this year's memorable shows. It wasn't easy narrowing the list down to 15. Concerts are in chronological order.

So much local talent and so much love. Uh, if I'm maybe a little too biased on this one, then let's go with the Mountain Goats, also in January. (January 14) JOHN SEABORN GRAY

Some of it felt like it wasn't quite all there, appropriate considering shadows and spirits, sleeping and dreaming, are a recurring theme for Radiohead ("The Gloaming," "Identikit"). But for those of us wondering if it would kill them to throw in a chord change, they gave us "Airbag" from OK Computer, and once in a while dug out a riff that is still as sharp as a blade, like Hail To the Thief's "There There." Energy was high amongst both crowd and band -- or as energetic as BTS members get, which is not very -- but the vibe was all-around positive. Doug Martsch, a front man not particularly known for his onstage loquaciousness, seemed to agree, even early on. "This is the first time in Houston that we aren't on some giant stage in some weird place," Martsch noted to the crowd with relief. "It's nice!" (March 12) NEPH BASEDOW

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't put McCartney amongst everyone else. Not fair to lump him in with the rest. That show floats way above, but that's just me.

No McCartney? Him and Radiohead were my two favorites of the year. Also the El-P/Killer Mike/Exquire/Despot show at Warehouse Live was really really good too.

Slayer, ZZ, and the Lips. Also Jane's addiction was really good at Bayou Place. The first time they've been good in a really long time. And, not that any of you would know this, but Rufus Wainwright at Bayou Place was unspeakably good.

Matt Hackworth, I would have included seeing Mavis Staples, Herbie Hancock and Dr. John on this list if we had room, three acts I saw at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Matt Hackworth, disagree. Donovan and Bruce were both amazing shows. Would have been amazing here too. Plus, we covered them as part of SXSW.

You are setting yourself up for ridicule when you have Austin concerts on this list.

What Pamela Dalton said. Honorable mention to Fiona.Apple. Rise Against are always great live.

for reasons of it being very damn cool, Face To Face performing Ignorance is Bliss acoustic at Fitz. There was some crappy Dubstep or something thumping like a bastard upstairs that night, so they decided to just play out back on the patio while we all sat around campfire style on the new picnic tables. about 60 people got to see this and hang out with Trevor and Scott, and it was much much cooler than whatever was going on upstairs!! a one of a kind show.

McCartney was excellent and I am by no means a Beatles fan! Garbage was incredibly amazing as well.

David Byrne + St. Vincent at The Hobby Center was my number one Houston show.  If I had better seats on the floor, McCartney would have been up there, but in the 400s section it wasn't as big of an impact...

Without a doubt, Paul McCartney. Nada Surf at Fitz was also exceptional.

Couple of non-Houston shows in this list of notable Houston concerts...

Saint Vitus and Dixie Witch at Fitzgerald's on 5/31! The fact that my band opened and Wino joined us for a version of Pentagram's Sign of the Wolf probably makes me biased, but I don't care. Speaking of which, my band, Sanctus Bellum, is playing a full set of Pentagram material with Bobby Liebling of Pentagram at Rudyard's on 12/22/12. I'd also have to mention Royal Thunder's set on Halloween at Rudyard's.
