House of Blues, November 30
The Old Crow boys seem to be the cooler Americana gateway drug of choice for younger listeners. A sort of anti-Mumfords you can rep without looking like a radio-rock tool, the pickers don't bash you over the head with dear melodies, just gritty stories and Doc Watson-approved bluegrass chicanery. The six or seven-piece group, depending on the touring cycle, has even been produced by the wooly Don Was of Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Todd Snider fame. CRAIG HLAVATY
Nick Greer
Continental Club, December 1
One of the brightest stars in the current Houston music explosion, Nick Greer is a bow-tied redheaded wunderkind, able to flitter between piano pop and hip-hop -- he helped out on the Niceguys' James Kelley -- with the flick of a wrist and the slightest touch. Starting at a Montrose open-mike at age 14 in 2001, Greer soon set off on a course of his own devising, melding keys, blues, and funk. He's surely a lifer, this one. CRAIG HLAVATY
Rush![]()
Toyota Center, December 2
Canadian rock gods Rush are now a legacy act of the highest order, able to attract grandfathers, grandmothers and their grandkids, plus hip parents and teething toddlers in 2112 rompers. The band's story was expertly told in star-studded 2010 rock doc Beyond the Lighted Stage, which makes a great starter for any Rush novice. (Fanatics too.)
For the tour behind this year's Clockwork Angels, the trio's first studio set in five years, Rush will be accompanied by the Clockwork Angels String Ensemble during the middle of the show. String-laden versions of "YYZ" and "The Spirit of Radio" should further boost their nerdy cachet, and of course there will be drum solos. CRAIG HLAVATY
