Coog Radio Celebrates a Year On the Street With Free Mango's Show Thursday

This Thursday night Coog Radio, the University of Houston's first-ever student-run radio outpost, will be celebrating a year of existence with a free and very killer show at Mango's.

Last year our fall intern Charne Graham covered the station's rise here on Rocks Off. This past June, the station won the title of Best Music Blog at the Houston Web Awards, too.

Coog Radio's One Year Anniversary Show is packed with goodness, from devastating twosome Female Demand, FLCON FCKER, Josiah Gabriel, Austin's Agent Ribbons, and one of my favorites from the weekly "Open Mic Knight" at Fitzgerald's, the Roosevelt House Band.

I guess I have seen The Roosevelt House Band at least once every few weeks since they first plugged in on the Fitz stage sometime last year, and each time has been enjoyable.

Their take on blues-rock -- think the Yardbirds through an Arctic Monkeys lens -- is never boring, plus you would be surprised to see how many younger acts at the open mic showcase are starting to rep the likes of Lightnin' Hopkins and Robert Johnson as chief influences. I saw a kid named Matthew Brodnax do some dirty things with a guitar about a month ago before he left for his freshman year at UTSA.

Coog Radio's showcase is of course free, and the doors open around 7 p.m.
