7 Cool & Cheap Weekenders: Bang Bangz, Praia Urbana, Greezy Wheels, Etc.

First up: Damn. According to Space City Rock (via Pegstar), the upcoming Guided by Voices show next Monday (Sept. 24) at Warehouse Live has been canceled. That would have been cool.

Anyhow, if you're a fan of shimmery guitars and sad songs, get thee to Cactus Music this evening at 5 p.m. sharp, for a preview/listening party for Seattle/South Carolina dreamers Band of Horses' fourth album Mirage Rock, which releases Monday. Remember the Old Town Spring stop of the second Railroad Revival Tour, featuring the Horses, Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson and Step Brothers actor John C. Reilly's band is not that far away - Oct. 24. Enter to win a free vinyl test pressing of Mirage Rock (great title), too.

One more plug for tonight's Canned Acoustica at Warehouse Live, the most fun you can have at a local show and still help out the Houston Food Bank. This time it's B L A C K I E showcasing his new "acoustic" LP Gen, plus Craig Kinsey, New York City Queens, Featherface and Second Lovers. This is the sixth time, so Canned Acoustica has now been around long enough to have its own YouTube channel. Congrats.

Rocks Off managed to land interviews with both bands on Sunday's huge indie-electro bill at Fitz with Niki & the Dove and Twin Shadow (coming up in a bit), so we could hardly leave off one of our favorite newer local bands, Bang Bangz. Even cooler, they let us "borrow" their cover of Radiohead's "Give Up the Ghost," from the Brits' King of Limbs LP, until their new vinyl EP is released in January. This cover tries to capture their brilliant and haunting track on a larger scale with over a dozen instruments creating angst, love, fairytale and science fiction," says banger Mario Rodriguez. We hope you enjoy it!" Oh, we will. Click here to listen to the song. Bang Bangz warms up with a free Cactus in-store at 3 p.m. Saturday

Damn. It's already time for another Praia Urbana all-day house party Saturday at Last Concert Cafe. This time's headliners are Britain's Lee Burridge, America's Doc Martin and Spain's Gonzolo Menoyo, plus and lots of others including Kyle Berg, Esteban Torres, Wes Walz and Bobby Blyss. 2 p.m. to 11, 18 and up.

Outside the Loop gig(s) of the week: Local metal singer Brad Lambert wrote in to let us know both of his bands have gigs up north this weekend. His Pantera-esque crew Day of Reckoning joins Defining Human Saturday night at the BFE Rock Club, while his more alternative-leaning crew Hindsight is part of a ginormous show Sunday at the 19th Hole in The Woodlands with Freakhouse, Deadbolt Zen, Daybreak Embrace, Engine 69, Power Rage, and Outside Drop.
