Last Night: 2 Chainz at House of Blues
"It's ya birthday, It's ya birthday! Bad bitch contest, you in first place!"
At the #MadeInAmerica festival in Philly a few weeks ago, only two performers graced the main stage both nights. The first was Jay-Z, the mastermind and curator of the festival. The second was Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz.
He performed with Kanye West to close out on the first night, and then was invited by Drake to swag out with him on the second. The fans went wild each time he hit the scene, drawing loud cheers and chants of "Truuu!"
Say what you will about his juvenile, hypersexual lyrics and elementary rhyming patterns, but the man knows how to turn up a crowd.
The former Tity Boi and his "Based on a T.R.U. Story" Tour rolled into House of Blues hard Wednesday night, bringing with him the popular ATL-party swag-rap that is topping the charts and airwaves with tracks such as "Mercy" and "No Lie."
A simple yet brilliant stage setup complete with blinding strobes and a giant DJ booth/video screen waited for the rapper to appear. Scenes from his past shows and video shoots played as the DJ fired up the already warm venue.
Beginning the show with "Yuck," the first single from his recently dropped B.O.A.T.S. album, he quickly established the mood: Frantic, shake-your-ass revelry. He followed with his verses from Kanye's "Mercy" and Nicki Minaj's "Beez In The Trap". The fans were all in -- grinding near the front barrier, gyrating on the balcony, and generally dancing in a manner that should have been labeled NSFW.
"Is it my Michael Jackson glove that's making you pass out baby?!" he asked an excitable young lady in the front row. His bedazzled hand wrapped around the mike all night, even as he raised his arms to demonstrate his notorious "Turn It Up" dance.
"Welcome to the B.O.A.T.S. Tour," he said, "where girls throw me bras, panties and blunts, then they pass the fuck out."
Ah, 2 Chainz, such a charmer.
