Rocks Off: When and where was your first gig in Houston, and how did it go?

Chase Hamblin: Wow. I barely remember my gig last week. I think my first Houston gig would have been at Instant Karma or Mausoleum (now AvantGarden) in probably 1999. I'm pretty sure I was awesome.

RO: What Houston-area venues do you play most often?

CH: While I have played just about every venue in Houston, these days I am most often at the Continental Club, Fitzgerald's or AvantGarden. I loved the old Walter's but haven't played the new one.

RO: How often do you play in the area?

CH: Full-band shows about once a month, with occasional solo singer-songwriter sets at places like Mucky Duck, Khon's, Warehouse Live Green Room, Caroline Collective, Natachee's and various coffee shops.

RO: Describe your sound in eight words or less.

CH: Psychedelic roots pop and melodic rock and roll.

RO: How did you come up with your name?

CH: I've just recently formed a new backing band, The Roustabouts. I've had this name for a while, but was still assembling the players. Roustabouts were the people who set up and broke down the tents and attractions for the old time traveling carnivals and circuses. Later it came to be applied to traveling workers of all sorts, particularly in the oil fields.

RO: Where would you like yourself or your band to be in one year? Ten years? Forty?

CH: In one year I would like us touring and playing regionally more often. I would also like to start a new record by then. In ten years, I would like to be touring the world and making records as we please. In 40 years I would like to still be alive and in good health!

RO: What is one thing you'd like to do (as a musician) before you pack it in?

CH: I'm not sure I'll ever "pack it in," since being an artist really isn't a job so much as a calling. I don't feel there is one goal in mind other than making great music. There is no final achievement that I am after besides making people feel and think.
