7 Cool & Cheap Weekenders: Soft Metals, Buxton, Grand Old Grizzly, Etc.
Correction (July 29, 6 p.m.): Apologies to Grand Old Grizzly's Will Thomas for somehow thinking his last name was Allen. And they really are brand-new.
Tonight L.A.-via-Portland electro duo Soft Metals (synthy, spooky, dreamy) headline the return of the Musum of Fine Arts, Houston's Mixed Media social-hours from 8 p.m. to midnight. The space will be tricked out by presenting sponsor IKEA, so you know it's going to be modern. Also performing are local DJs Ceeplus Bad Knives, Bobby DJ of //TENSE, and Dave Wrangler. Tickets start at $6 for "Art Crowd" members and go up from there; see the MFAH's Web site for more.
At 7 p.m. tonight, Aurora Picture Show is hosting a screening of INNI, the new documentary about Icelandic gods/monsters Sigur Ros; rather, a "multi-screen immersive cinematic event both indoors and outdoors" at the new Aurora quarters at 2442 Bartlett near Greenway Plaza. The jacket copy describes INNI as "filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy and claustrophobia... cocoons the viewer in a one-on-one relationship with the band, eschewing the audience for closeness, depicting how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live." Also, Two Star Symphony performs. We are so there.
Just a quick plug for our "Cocktails & Covers" happy-hour shows going strong at House of Blues' Bronze Peacock Room. The first two weeks sold out, and this evening brings the "quintessential '90s party band," Love Fool. See what other bands besides the Cardigans Love Fool knows on their song list. Free show.
Wes Wallace, the man in the Classic Numbers DJ booth for lo these many years, posted a few new mixes on his Soundcloud page this week. Our favorite is his Nitzer Ebb/Underworld mash-up "MuderGirl," but "Honest Monday," which butts the Bravery against New Order, isn't bad either. No, scratch that - it's Prince's "Erotic City" vs. Laid Back's "White Horse." Wallace will be back in action at Classic Numbers tonight, of course.
