Rocks Off: When and where was your first gig in Houston, and how did it go?
The Suffers: Our first gig was at The Mink's Backroom last summer, before all the new ownership drama, as a part of their "Dollar Well Tuesdays." The turnout was great and we figured they liked it since nobody threw anything.
RO: What Houston-area venues do you play most often?
TS: We currently play Rudyard's and Fitzgerald's most often, but we try to mix it up and play new places when we get the opportunity.
RO: How often do you play in the area?
TS: We average about 1-2 times a month, locally.
RO: How did you come up with your name?
TS: It came from the movie Rockers. The main character, Horsemouth (main actor and real studio reggae drummer) makes a living hustling 45s. When he goes to ask for them on "consignment" from the studios/record labels in Kingston, he insists they should help as he is a "sufferer."
Since we also hustle our shit, Patrick Kelly (keyboardist) thought it would be a good name. We were initially The Sufferers, but we later changed it to simply The Suffers.
RO: Where would you like yourself or your band to be in one year? Ten years? Forty
TS: One year: Performing to a packed house in a Houston club without the fear of arbitrary noise-ordinance violations being imposed on us, our sound engineers, or our venue. We also hope we'll be spending time out of town developing a larger regional following and celebrating the release of a full-length record.
Ten years: Successfully touring the world to promote the latest album that we released ourselves.
Forty years: Hopefully we'll be alive, happy, and still making music.
RO: What is one thing you'd like to do (as musicians) before you pack it in?
TS: Quit our day jobs and spend our days writing, recording, and performing music or record with Quincy Jones
The Suffers play the HPMA showcase 9 p.m. Sunday, August 5 at Lucky's Pub, 801 St. Emanuel.
