Local blues guitarist Leo Aston has passed away. According to posts on the Houston Blues Society and Houston Blues Museum Facebook sites, Aston finally succumbed to cancer in the early hours this morning.

The leader of the Leo Trio, Alston was one of the good guys in the Houston blues scene. He had been diagnosed with cancer last year.

Aston began playing guitar after seeing Albert King in London. He gigged in England until moving to the U.S in 1999. He played in a few Houston bands before moving to New York City to do his own thing, and held a twice-a-week residency at Kenny's Castaways before relocating to Houston in 2007.

He released his only recording, Have You Heard, in 2010. Aston was working on his next album when his health worsened suddenly in 2011.

According to posts on the Houston Blues Society page, blues players and friends of Aston will gather for a remembrance Thursday evening at the Big Easy. Funeral arrangements are pending.

He was a true gentleman and a " Renaissance Man" his gifts as a musician were but one of his many talents. RIP Leo , thank you for the joy you brought to my life.
