Spotify's Houston Top 10 Singles Is, Uh, Yeah...
This past weekend I was at Academy near my house filling out paperwork to buy a shotgun and the One Direction single "What Makes You Beautiful" was playing over the store speaker system. Before that moment I had thought that One Direction only existed in emails from PR agents, my music listings, and Rolling Stone.
"Who listens to this sort of stuff?" I wondered as I took the bill of sale of my new Mossberg and two boxes of shells. Surely no one at Academy at noon on a Saturday knew who One Direction was, except me. And surely no one buying the most trusted and top of the line home defense shotgun should know who they are.
The newest UK pop import to make it to colonial shores, is currently on a full-scale summer tour, and will be at the The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Sunday night. It's sold out, by the way.
According to Spotify and their metrics, we all love One Direction, and Gotye, Fun., and Justin Bieber here in the Bayou City. Like, a lot. Enough to besmirch our inherent hipness and write a blog about it.
Today I found Spotify's breakdown of the Top 10 songs in 18 markets around the country, including Houston. The streaming music site keeps track of the awfulness that we do when know else is looking while we are supposed to be entering data or sending emails.
Houston, you have a problem. Or at least our Spotify users do. But then again, maybe we are really good at irony and this is all one big viral flash mob on Spotify. Damn Houston, was May really that bad? Oh cool, Andre 3000 makes music for razor blades now.
