Day 1, and another

Day 2

Day 3

Dance music is fighting for its soul. The charts are filled with tracks (Rihanna, Flo Rida) that borrow from the ecstatic trance and pulsing grooves of electronic dance music. The last time pop was so infatuated with the dance floor was 1979, the year disco died.

This time around fans are more savvy about what's real and what's just radio. But the flood of new fans and industry cash has pushed the scene to a new level of soul-searching. There's so much demand for EDM that pop stars are now DJing. Consider...

... Will.i.am and Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas are now performing DJ sets, not to mention the likes of Calvin Harris, the British dance-pop crooner whose music is genuine and sublime.

And yet, why do we need a star like Harris to DJ at Electric Daisy Carnival, as he did Saturday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway? He evolved as a singer, not a spinner. And his set last night -- before it was cut off by organizers concerned about high winds -- was of the press-play variety.

Sure, Harris sneaked in a few outside tunes, such as Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At," but his session was mostly a showcase of his own songs, including call-and-response moments.

Here's a guy who can sing, and he wasn't singing! He was playing CDs of himself singing!

Does anyone else find that wrong?

It's bad enough that Kaskade, Deadmau5, David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia play predictable "sets" of their own tunes for giddy followers...

To Get That Perfect Sound. its Not A One Time Sit And Done Type Of Production. its An 8Hour A Day/ 5 Days A Week Type Production. Trust i Went To School For Audio Production And Being An Audio Engineer is Not As Easy As it Sounds. it Takes Time And Patience And Trial And Error. it is not Easy To Recreate The Exact Same Sound Live On Stage As it is To Play A Drum Or Guitar. it Involves A Whole Lot Of Tweaking Normal Sounds To Get That Edm Sound!

Before People Start Talking Shit About Calvin Harris And EDM, You All Better Do Some Research And Appreciate Great Production! To The Fans Yes its About Listening To The Dj Play Music They Have Created But To The Dj its about Showing The Product Of Hours And Hours Of Working To The Fans. To Truly Appreciate EDM You First Have To Know How its Made. it involves Hours Of Editing Hours Of Running Sounds Through Filters And Amps And Distortions

I think the bottom line here is that EDM fans don't care about live performance, and are perfectly happy listening to playback and watching some dude dance while he presses play. It is not a live performance, it is just a party where the guy who made the music is also there dancing. When you go see a live band, especially a local band, you can be sure that they put just as much work in in the studio producing their album, and then do their best to recreate that live by ACTUALLY PLAYING music.  BTW, it is totally possible to perform electronic music live without using playback machines, it is just not easy. Just ask Al Jourgensen, who's band Ministry has been performing for 30 years without using any tracks.

We go to a Calvin Harris show TO LISTEN TO CALVIN HARRIS MUSIC! Your article was a joke. For a music lover, you should learn about the genre's before bashing them all. Producing dance music tracks takes just as much musical ability as creating a rock song. The only difference is in the way they perform. A producer learns his craft by mastering the music producing software that he chooses and mastering how to use CDJ's with all of the mixing equipment. A rock band make their music and then play their instruments in a live performance. Both are good in their own way. And can be equally loved by everyone. Go to an electronic music event to actually understand what is going on. The only difference is fans of electronic music won't go bashing rock music and will actually try to help you understand what is so great about their favorite genre of music. You might even make a friend if you are willing to open your mind a little bit. my .02 cents More Electro Please www.MoreElectroPlease.com
