HPD Releases ABN Shooting Report: Poppa C Was Target
The Houston Police Department released its report of the investigation into Wednesday morning's shooting outside two southwest Houston nightclubs that killed three people and wounded two others, including popular Houston rapper Trae tha Truth.
According to the report, the shooting occurred around 3:15 a.m. in the parking lot of 9850 Westpark, a strip center that contains the Diamond Club (formerly Scores Cabaret). When the officers arrived, three people were already deceased: Coy Thompson, 23; Erica Rochelle Dotson, 30; and Carlos Durell Dorsey, 31. The other two, Frazier Thompson (Trae) and Willie Watkins, 37, were taken to Ben Taub Hospital and Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital with "non-life-threatening injuries."
The report says Trae had just performed a concert at a club inside the location, and that shots were fired as patrons were leaving at closing time. (Club Blue, the club listed on the above flyer, is a few miles away on the Southwest Freeway.)
HPD's investigation determined that Coy Thompson was the target of the shooting. The report says Thompson, also known as "Poppa C," had been in a domestic dispute on June 17 and received death threats. Carlos Dorsey was known as "Dinky D," and also affiliated with Trae's group Assholes by Nature.
Rocks Off's Brandon Caldwell, who also runs local rap blog Day and a Dream, says the two men were not rappers themselves but part of Trae's inner circle.
The report goes on to say that investigators believe Thompson was involved in the November 2011 shooting outside southwest Houston after-hours club Breakers that claimed the life of Dominique Brown, known as "Money Clip C" and as Trae's "right-hand man."
No arrests have been made in that investigation, and HPD says it has not been determined if the two shootings are related.
