Already? Indeed.

So let's get to it. Here are your 2012 Houston Press Music Award nominees. Voting runs through midnight Sunday, August 5, also the night of the of the HPMA Showcase. More details soon, but for now... drum roll... here is the 2012 Houston Press Music Awards ballot.

Actually, I'm not thinking of Best of Houston Awards. If saving your opinions and critical thoughts for Best Band Name is what makes the most sense to you, then again I think you're all discrediting what you do. Let people clamor for votes on Best eVite Music Series, and leave more substantial subjects like Best New Act or Musician of the Year to something more than social network pestering.

Alright. Houston Press, this is totally constructive criticism. I value what you guys do, it's important for our city and extremely important for our music scene. I understand allowing people to write in the votes to create the nominations. On the surface level, I really do understand that. In one aspect you have bands wanting to be nominated for the work they've done and it benefits them as well as you guys. In another aspect you have people who have done ZERO work and win the nomination for Best Label (please tell me you agree with that one. if you don't then I don't know what to say).  The real problem is there is no filter for quality. You guys cover the music scene! It's your job to take what this city has to offer and present it in a critical form. You're basically handing your job to other people. I don't think you're being lazy. But you're really discrediting yourself by doing this. If I were you, I'd much rather have people like Noon complaining why they weren't nominated, than have a ballot that largely misrepresents where the music scene is right now. Sure, you will get a lot of shit for it. That's kinda your job. Set a standard for the city we live in. There's nothing you guys can do about this now. It's out and it can't be taken back. However, I ask that you guys really think about what you're doing. And hey, maybe there's something I don't know about. Maybe Village Voice made you guys do this, I don't know. It makes sense, you generate more clicks I'm sure by having the people clogging Facebook News Feeds to click on a page with a nice advertisement, it works out better on your end.  I want to be wrong. In fact I insist you tell me I'm wrong. I'm nobody. My opinion is no different than anyone else's. But I really care about this city and the music being made in it. I miss The Groceries, I miss being seeing Roy at Walters on Washington, I miss Daily Grind. I just want what's best for everyone involved and I think everyone can largely agree that this ballot does not do that. Nobody care's about the HPMA's because we haven't been given a reason to. People are going to complain, but you could at least be defending your opinions instead of defending a flawed system. I hope this doesn't come across rude or disrespectful, but it's something I feel very strongly about. Let's hope for a better year next year.

Keep in mind, some people dont really give a shit if their band is nominated. I know I don't. The punk and hardcore catagory is pretty lacking though.

HP doesn't nominate the bands, it is done by voting. Also, it is impossible to pay homage to such a large & diverse scene in just five slots.

Ok
Ok

Having noon in 5 nominations proves that this whole thing is a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously. Where is delo, rob gullate, marcus manchild, propain etc....HP refuses to take Houston Rap seriously

You're thinking of the Best of Houston Awards. Those are selected by Houston Press staff members. So you get one where everybody votes, and one where just the experienced critics / writers vote. It's up to you which one to value more.
