Rich's Property Owner Locks Out Tenants

Categories: This Just In

Richs lockout may 24.JPG
The property owner of Rich's Nightclub, the Midtown dance club about to celebrate its 29th anniversary this fall, has locked out his tenants, who had been running the club since October 2011, and terminated their lease.

Nassim Joseph Jr., Managing Member of 2401 San Jacinto, LLC, confirmed to Rocks Off that he was now seeking new management for the club, saying the previous tenants had defaulted on their lease. The above photos, which say that Rich's is in default and has been locked out, were sent to Rocks Off by Shea Serrano, the now-former Nightfly columnist whose final column ran this week. (They were sent to him by someone who saw the notices in the window and asked to remain anonymous.)

Joseph said that his tenants, whom he declined to name, were "operating inappropriately."

He said he has someone in mind to take over the lease, who he hopes will "change the tone of people's impression" about the club. Joseph said he did not know exactly when the new management would take over, but he hoped it would be as soon as this weekend, and definitely by next weekend.

The TABC is meeting in Austin about the club's liquor license right now, he added.

Once the new tenants are in place, Joseph said he hoped to do a "great renovation" in time for Rich's 29th anniversary in October.

Rich's Twitter account (@RichsNightclub) has been dormant since Tuesday, although a little less than a day ago someone there retweeted Rocks Off's review of DJ Ferry Corsten's show this past Friday.

The club's longtime Web site, www.richsnightlife.com, now redirects to www.4500washingtonave.com, which bills itself as the "newest addition to the Washington Avenue Strip... every night will surprise you."

I used to party at Rich's like all the time back in 2002-2004.  I went on Friday nights (I like the gay crowd better and besides all my friends were/are gay or bi).  I heard that they have changed it all the way around and such.  I miss the divas, like Chyna Doll, Diva Divine, Virginia Slim...  Even Lady Chablis was there doing a show a few times (trying to steal my best friend away from me).  After I heard that it changed, I never went back.  I heard they redid everything.  I wish they had left it the way it was.

The money hungry bouncers finally made a BIG mistake. My guess would be that the $25 had nothing to do with a "cover", but would go directly into the pocket of the bouncer requesting the $25. The bouncers like to create a line afterhours and they make their money charging MEN to skip the line. LADIES walk right inside, but if you're a male or have a "thuggish" look then you are denied access altogether, told to stand in line or asked to "tip" the bouncer to skip the line. If Jason had already been inside the club I could understand his frustration and confusion in someone (bouncer) at the door requesting MORE money to come back into a club that he had already paid to get into. The cash register for the cover charge is beyond the front doors of Rich's. You pay inside, so technically there's no way they would have been disputing about a $25 "cover" outside the entrance. Also I can never remember when it was $25 to get into Rich's. Even on nights with celebrity hosts or big name DJ's I think tickets (cover) were only $20 at the most. I've seen how much those bouncers pocket from guys skipping the line. The end result here is awful. My heart aches for everyone affected by the loss of this man just out to celebrate a milestone in life: turning 40. Sad.

The club is not moving, it is still on San Jacinto. They have been waiting on the new liquor license to get processed. It is under new management/ownership. They plan to be bigger and better than ever. They are open for after hours on Friday and Saturday and teen nights on Sunday. Go by there for afterhours and see the improvements that they already made. Cleaned the club, stained the patio and looks great. Check it out.

I like to know where Rich's is now and what are they planning. Aside from what happened. I am sorry for your loss whether the person was bad or good. It doesn't matter. A loss is a loss. For my own personal reasons, I just want to know what's up with the club despite what happened and when will it open and WHERE. I keep hearing that it's not on San Jac anymore and I can't go to the website because like the article mentioned, it goes to Washington Ave.'s website instead.

From personal experience, I can only say that the staff at Rich's is great. They've always been nice and curteous at the door and inside. I've been to many clubs in different cities, and these guys stand out for being much nicer than the average door staff. If they don't let you in, it's probably because you look like a douchebag or you're really ugly. Or both. This Jason character (RIP) didn't look like the kind of guy you would like to have around when you go out to a club, so the bouncers were just doing what they were supposed to do, like other people said. Their intention was to protect themselves and the establishment, not to kill somebody. At least that's how I see it. I know a couple of the people in management at Rich's and they are genuinely nice people that are passionate about music and they've worked hard to give Houston some decent nightlife. I personally don't like their guest DJ choices (I don't understand why they spend so much money to bring dinosaur trance DJ's from the 90's, when there's so much fresh talent out there), but that's another topic. Houston needs electronic music enthusiasts, like the staff at Rich's, to at least have some sort of club scene. It sucks that things like unrightful lawsuits and that damn noise ordinance law keep killing the already-sad nightlife we have here.

Who cares about Rich's? It's a trashy club with minors consuming alcohol along with the staff selling "water bottles" filled with vodka. They have the potential to be something great. If they really wanted to bring in a better crowd they would stop letting minors in and fire their bouncers.

First, If you look back at the post from 2 weeks ago, they state that the Grand Jury case was done and "No Billed". As of 6-26-12 there was no case that could be found about the Grand Jury hearing, that is ALL I am saying.

Sam
Sam

uhhhhhh the grand jury case was last week in downtown i was there. stop posting bullshit

Sam
Sam

Are you mentally ill? honestly? Do you know how long it takes HPD to arrive at any scene at 5am?!?! I called them once cuz a hobo robbed me and they took over 2 hours. You have to make split second decisions in life and i applaud richs.

Sam
Sam

its funny how the only way you can win a settlement is in civil court cuz any logical judge and juror would have let him walk which they did. LOLLL

Sam
Sam

lol i love how you're so pissed but too bad no one believes your bs cept his own family AKA YOU. The grand jury didnt file a single charge on Cody, keep smoking that herb gurl.

Were you there? Are you one of the employees? It seems to me if Jason Jefferson was threatening everyone and everyone felt they were so endangered for their lives, then without hesitation they would have told the Police yes, and Mr. Jefferson would have been given more than a mere citation for Public intoxication.

Move on!
Move on!

The first thing the cops asked when arriving at the scene after RICHS EMPLOYEES called them was if they wanted to press charges on Jason. So get over yourself and move the fuck on. It's done.

l.theriot00@yahoo.com
l.theriot00@yahoo.com

No matter what criminal history you have you do not deserve to be beat with a chain over nothing! Police should have been called if they felt he was a threat! They took it on their own hands and got lucky that he has a past because that's the only reason they will get away with it. And Leroy you should have ended your statement at "I didn't know him". Because that's all it is! YOU DON'T! Jason was never convicted of any violent crime. He made plenty of bad choices and did his time for it. Everyone who doesn't KNOW what the Fuck is going on keep your ignorant ass comments to yourself and and have some fucking respect!

Victorias737

Sorry type-o Meth head, just wanted it understood what I meant..Im not one for the drugs except on the cop shows but never have seen a big fat one., They have always been skinny bony people. Am I right or wrong on that.

Victorias737

And its a shame more people dont come forward and tell what they saw so that the truth can come out. Because other wise justice may never be served.

Victorias737
Victorias737

where did you get the fact that he was arrested for impersonating a police officer? I would like to read this for myself!

Victorias737
Victorias737

Like I said time will tell. I do have a question, its been said Jason Jefferson had a gun, well I looked into some public records and found the night of the incident Jason was cited for Public Intoxication. If he had a gun as its been said and was threatening the lives of the people inside of Riches the WHY was he not arrested by the Houston PD? Im just saying wouldnt that have been what the Bouncers or your Cody Malloy would have told the police was going on when they arrived that Jason Jefferson was wheeling a gun around threatening the lives of the people and he would have been arrested and NOT been cited for Public Intoxication. It all seems rather odd to me. There's just alot of things that just don't make any sense. So, to me ...NO its NOT over and maybe in the Civil Suit things will be discovered that the Grand Jury wasnt smart enough to figure out....things have a way of coming to LIGHT ..with the guidance of the GOOD THE LORD! THOU SHALT NOT KILL! No matter if the man had a record or not. Where is the Gun.        Oh, and by the way "WHO HAS EVER HEARD OF A 240 LB MEATH HEAD , REALLY!" I truly find that funny!

So the grand jury was wrong? LOL

I think only time will tell and only God knows the truth to all and he is the one that will  be the judge to the true Justice and no matter what anyone says or thinks , it will all be found out in the end!!!!

Jody2005tx
Jody2005tx

Look back at the post, I never said anything about Cody getting charged, In fact, I said only the people there knew what happened and that the Grand jury did not file charges against him. I still believe Zack will be charged on multiple charges related to Rich's issues. I have no issues with Cody and was happy the Grand Jury No-Billed him, hate to see anyone in that kind of situation.

Adam
Adam

hey jody where did you go saying they would be charged??? what do you have to say about the grand jury decision yesterday?????????????????????/

Adam
Adam

Cody never attacked anyone hence why he wasnt charged by the grand jury, there was another LICENSED bouncer there who did hit him and he has his commissioned license from the state so not quite sure what you are talking about

Sam
Sam

sorry i meant to say the grand jury dropped all the charges on him. The family members are obviously still moving forward with the civil case for obvious reasons. let the man be buried in peace and stop trying to make money.

Guest

what are you saying? he can't be acquitted of all charges because there was not a trial.  do you mean that he won't be charged in the criminal court or do mean that the civil lawsuit filed against him won't move forward?

Sam

NOPEEEEEEEE the grand jury didnt file shit!!!! stop posting UTTER BULLSHIT!

The Facts
The Facts

Jason Jefferson has a know past of criminal behavior.  His arrest record is proof of that and indisputable (FACT).  He has been arrested and convicted of IMPERSONATING A POLICE OFFICER (FACT), has done prison time (FACT) and he had been indited in Orange County and was out on bond when this occurred (FACT).  What facts are you justifying your comments on?  From all I have discovered it seems the owners were doing what they should have been doing by keeping the danger from entering in to the club and putting any of the people they are responsible to protect in harms way. As far as the landlord shutting them down and leasing to others already in the works for permits and liscense, seem to me that he used the opportunity to benefit himself.  Have there been any civil suits brought toward the club or the club owners?  Maybe the landlord is not the only one trying to benefit themselves.

Ok. I guess the events have been moved to Stereo Live. I was planning on going to Markus Shulz at Rich's. I am glad I waited to purchase tickets. I hope those who did purchase at the Rich's box office or website will be honored at the new venue. There are some things I like about Rich's. I liked the lighting and sound system. I hated the "unisex" bathrooms. The parking situation is terrible. I especially despise the parking scam going on at the lot across the street that "closes" at 3am. They had the signs blocked by staff or a paid homeless guy and the parking attendant said it was for the entire night. The inside signs were not lit or blocked so there was no notice. It is fraud because a lot of cars were towed during the Ferry Corsten event since it lasted until 4:30am.

As far as the arguments about why Rich's is closed here in this article, I honestly don't  know what to think. The few times I went to Rich's I was treated very well by the staff and all of them were courteous to me personally.

I will attend Markus Shulz at Stereo Live this time around. The venue is not bad but the upstairs is not ideal for viewing the stage downstairs. That is something they need to improve. The upstairs at Rich's is easier to view.

Lindsey

The truth will prevail. There are two sides to every story. The family only knows one side. Stop trying to ruin an innocents mans life and try to focus on grieving over your loss rather than trying to make money off it. Time will tell the real truth.

I am of no relations to Mr. Jefferson, I just have been reading your blogs and if you go back yourself and read all the contradictions you and the other people have posted that seem to act like they know so much, you will notice that you wrote that this guy Cody hit Mr. Jefferson and someone else wrote that it was another person, a licensed security guard, so it just makes me wonder ....that is just one of many things wrong with stories you have written. To BAD the Grand Jury isnt wiser to lies....and as for Lindsey the HPD would not leave it up to the Bouncers to decide whether or not if they wanted to press charges on someone in possession of a firearm at a public place, that was threathening everyones lives as you have all said so many times , especially if that person was such a harden criminal as you all have made well known of Mr. Jefferson, if he had a gun, he would have been placed under arrest and the gun confiscated and charges pressed , not just cited for mere public intoxication. And Im sure it would have made Major Headlines of a story in the papers, because that is big news.

Jody2005tx

I have read the blogs with interest and have kept an open mind, I dont know what happened at the club since I was not there. That being said, I went to pull the Grand Jury record yesterday and there is no record of the hearing having occured, I am not sure what is going on, but I have pulled Grand Jury hearing cases before and no one could find this one. Will let yall know of any facts that turn up.

Rich.s is open for Friday and Saturday afterhours and Sunday Teen event until the Liquor License is resolved. The previous owner was evicted and his Liquor License is under investigation so the TABC did not want to pull it from the location, but it will happen soon and the new owners are ready to open that day. The events were set up by the previous owner and have had to be rescheduled or moved for now. I was at Rich;s last night and had fun with my friends. I look forward to seeing yall there in the future.

are you going to write a story on it?

im still baffled after i found out the REAL facts yesterday! Do you think its just it magically happened that some felon thug goes to richs and some shit randomly happens?? Nothing of this caliber has ever happened before at richs and magically a thug whos drunk goes and something happens?

damn I know if I was cody I damn would've protected myself too.

The family thinks that he was "murdered" for not paying a cover charge. Do they think he is the only one in the history of the club being opened that had a problem with paying cover? Get over yourself and stop trying to benefit from the situation. Get a job and make your money the normal way.
