Memorial Day, the last Monday of May is a federal holiday originated to commemorate our country's fallen soldiers. Yes, some view it as a work holiday and a good time to barbecue, but our veterans would have to disagree.

To honor our vets, we put together a playlist this day in remembrance of those Americans who have fallen and to those who have risked their lives -- and continue to do so -- for our freedom

Here are 10 songs just for y'all:

10. Jefferson Airplane, "Volunteers": This song appears on the well-known Forrest Gump soundtrack. The songs purpose was to take a stand against the government as well as the war in Vietnam. However, people tend to put their own meaning into the song. Here's to the men and women who volunteer for our country.

9. Jimmie Osborne, "God Please Protect America": The lyrics state it clearly: "They're fighting in Korea, the boys are called to go/ To meet the enemy as he comes across the line/ God please protect America in this troubled time." The song was recorded in 1950 to see our troops through.

8. Jimi Hendrix, "All Along the Watchtower: I asked my grandpa which song most stuck to him during war. His answer was straightforward: Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower." I wouldn't argue with that since the movie character, Forrest Gump, is fighting in Vietnam as this song plays on the soundtrack.

"Nineteen" by Paul Hardcastlehttp://www.afn.org/~afn30091/s...

And, of course, "War (What Is It Good For)" sung by Edwin Starr -- though sadly, it has been censored since 9/11, what an un-American thing for Clear Channel to do!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W...

and how could anyone choose a version of "The Star Spangled Banner" other than the performance by Jimi Hendrix?  Controversial -- even dangerous -- then, an absolute classic now.

When I submitted my post it was The Last Rebel. I know Skynrd well. I will have them change it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention y'all.

Maybe you mean "The Last Rebel" for Lynyrd Skynyrd? "The Last Soldier" is a Pearl Jam song.
