Ask a Rapper: Krucial Picks Which 2012 Rap Tapes Will Be Crucial

Categories: Ask a Rapper

The hip-hop world is a less than sensible place -- lots of times, you're even required to clarify when bad means bad and when bad means good -- so once a week we're going to get with a rapper and ask them to explain things. Something you always wanted to ask a rapper? E-mail sheaserrano@gmail.com.

This Week's Rapper: Krucial

This Week's Prompt: This one comes from a regular reader who asked to be referred to as Regular Reader via e-mail. Paraphrased for clarity: We're watching all of these guys begin to build careers lately. And it's really starting to seem like we're about to enter a new era. That said, which rappers have projects that could potentially do something substantial this year?

Krucial: My list:

1. 2 Chainz*, Based on a T.R.U. Story: Having some of the hottest features and singles that droppped this year, you wanna see an artist this popular live up to the hype.

*This guy is about 1,000 times fun. His stutter-step flow, gadgeted into an unmistakable identity, will be to rap's progression what Drake's was a few years ago. Guaranteed.

2. Big K.R.I.T., Live From the Underground: We need more timeless country rap tunes, live instruments and something you can walk away with. Period.

3. Juvenile, Rejuvenation: One of my* all-time favorite rappers. I see a lot of artists that still stem from his style and you can tell he influenced.

*Everyone's. Here's to hoping that this is the second coming of his seminal 400 Degreez.

4. Bow Wow, Underrated: Cash Money signed him*, been had hits in the game; this is either gonn be a hit or miss. Why not?

Ask a Rapper: If you had to guess, which guy's tape do you think will be less than enjoyable?

Krucial: I would have to say Bow Wow. It's hard to sound hungry and keep reinventing yourself when you've been that rich for that long. He seems to shine more as an actor.
