The '90s Dream Is Alive In The Woodlands This Summer
Barenaked Ladies, Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, and Cracker are heading to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on July 20. The "Last Summer on Earth" will take the crew on over 30 stops through the United States, celebrating the last summer on Earth with some of the best bands who put out some of the first CDs and cassettes some of you ever bought.
There's no word yet if, in the event that world doesn't in fact end by December, concertgoers will be eligible for refunds. Though a summer full of 10-minute harmonica solos in the middle of Blues Traveler's "But Anyway" may hasten the end quicker for our precious mudball.
All of these bands are Houston regulars, with Big Head making it through House of Blues just a few weeks back. Country-rock smartass David Lowery was at Fitzgerald's last May touring both Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven.
I saw Blues Traveler's John Popper solo in a club at last year's SXSW in Austin and my hopes were dashed, and so I went back to the hotel and fell asleep listening to the Traveler's 1996 live double LP, Live From The Fall.
It's like these artists from the '90s think they can diversify and grow as musicians and just forget about the fat boys who tried to play harmonica because of them.
As far the Barenaked Ladies, remember that song "One Week"? That wasn't even their best single. They had about half a dozen more that were way better, like "If I Had $1,000,000", "Brian Wilson" and "The Old Apartment."
Their ousted ex-lead singer (snifffff) Steven Page had a Van Morrison thing on the latter cut, but no one cares because none of you listen to as much 102.9 FM The Planet as I did in junior high.
