Dozens of local rock, blues, jazz, folk and jam acts take over Dan Electro's Guitar Bar in the Heights for the completely free annual South by Due East festival, tonight through Monday. Door times are 5 p.m. Tonight and Monday, 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.


DJ duo Ceeplus Bad Knives and Mr. Castillo are up to no good at their Asylum night with guests Robert Disaro and Tangled Shadows. Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top Lounge, 3714 Main, no cover.

ZenHill Records presents an evening with its artists Southern Backtones, Roky Moon & BOLT!, Wheel Workers, Rev. Craig Kinsey, Winter Wallace and Sideshow Tramps. Fitzgerald's, 2706 White Oak, $10. See a closer look at the Backtones' new album La Vie en Noir this week's Houston Press.


Super Happy Fun Land's annual SXSW Overflow fest starts tonight with the first of more than 80 bands, Brooklyn's LES Racquet, Korea's Galaxy Express and Austin's Sphynx, and runs through March 24. Jack Topht, the Fucks, PAPAYA and B L A C K I E present an evening of family-friendly entertainment tonight at Notsuoh for only $3.

See what James Mercer and his latest batch of musical merry-makers are up to when Cactus Music hosts a listening party for the Shins' first album in five years, Port of Morrow, at noon Saturday. The actual Shins are playing SNL later Saturday and at SXSW next week.


Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal will play a solo piano set at Cactus Music at 2:30 Sunday. See Rocks Off later today for an interview with Barnes; Of Montreal plays Sunday at Fitz with Cults, Roman Gianarthur and Kishi Bashi.


The Continental Club is packed with soul and fatback funk all weekend, with Memphis' the Bo-Keys tonight and Texas' own The Relatives and Kool & Together Saturday. Little Joe Washington warms up tonight at the club's free happy hour.


It's a little steeper than the other events on this list, but the annual electronic-music extravaganza Praia Urbana may be the best value of the weekend. Performers include the UK's ATFC, DJ Spen, Austin's Toddy B, Andrei Morant, KPFT's Esteban Torres. Tickets start at $20 (online advance) or $30 the day of. 2 p.m. Saturday, Last Concert Cafe, 1403 Nance.
