Whitney Houston In Houston: A Brief Retrospective

All morning, the world woke up to the shocking, but not altogether surprising, news that troubled pop/R&B superstar Whitney Houston died Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. Houston, 48, was pronounced dead at around 3:55 p.m. at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, according to Reuters.

No cause of death has been announced, and an autopsy is pending.

Houston only appeared in Houston a handful of times - as befitting a perfomer of her vocal stature, only at arenas and amphitheaters. Her first concert here came as opener for Luther Vandross at the Summit in August 1985. She was 22 years old at the time, a freshly minted star thanks to her brand-new debut album, Whitney Houston. The above footage of the show later became a popular Internet clip.

Houston's headlining concerts came in September 1987 at the Summit, and at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in June 1991 on the "I'm Your Baby Tonight" tour. The 16-month Bodyguard World Tour reached the Summit in August 1994.

And that was it. Her last U.S. tour, 1999's "My Love Is Your Love World Tour," never came to Houston. Several shows were canceled, including as close as Memphis, but it appears the tour was never even routed through Texas.

Houston never played RodeoHouston (we thought she had at some point), and her first tour in a decade, 2010's Nothing But Love tour, never made it to the U.S. Maybe it would have at some point. We'll never know.

Jennifer Hudson will perform a tribute to Houston at Sunday night's Grammys, The New York Times reported. Rocks Off will have more about Houston later this week.
