What If? Five Potential Hosts For A Revamped Soul Train

Categories: Five Spot

The news of Don Cornelius' suicide earlier this week left many stunned and hurt, especially those who were fans of the legendary TV show Soul Train. Noted for being the alternative to American Bandstand, the show ran from 1971 to 2006 opening the doors to young performers and countless generations starring at Don and muttering "Love, Peace and Soul" right along with him.

Even though the show lost its spark once hip-hop began dominating pop culture in the '80s and early '90s, classic reruns air today on various programming. Still, it would be remiss without thinking - what would Soul Train if they decided to bring it back full time and who could carry the legacy of hosting it?

Here are the requirements to be the host of the revamped Soul Train. One, you have to have a connection to your audience that doesn't make you seem like a curmudgeon, or at least not like that In Living Color "Old Train" skit. Two, you sort of have to be young America goes for that stuff. Three, you can't be Ryan Secreast. Should be simple enough, right? Good.

Hear me out on this. We know it's been near six years since JT released FutureSex/LoveSounds and then decided movies were a better fit for him. We sulked, we cried, we played "My Love" twenty-five times. Here's how I see it. JT hosting Soul Train gives us free clearance to watching him perform sometimes while also hosting. Plus, a Soul Train line with JT involve would mean we'd have to have some sort of competition that only dancing could solve.

Bill's already got the comedic part right as a smooth individual who could easily carry the funny and suave nature of being a host. Remember, he was an MTV VJay for a few years and made that cult classic How To Be A Player film.

Nobody in music and I mean nobody, is cooler behind the drums on TV than Questlove. After reading his thoughts on the passing of Cornelius, watching him spin at the House of Dereon last Feburary and his insane knowledge of all things funk and soul and outright good, Quest would be more than deserving to host. I'm sure Jimmy Fallon wouldn't mind.

Star of film, a somewhat successful music career and always a pretty face, Milian could easily take the reigns of the show simply because people tune in to watch beautiful women strut around and do their stuff. It's giving people what they want - hot women on music programming.

Since Beyonce was unavailable, something about having a baby named Blue and two guys from Houston wanting to build a monument in her honor, Kelly is the next best thing. She's a bubbly personality, easy on the eyes and could carry a show. Long as she has the soul for it.

What no Wayne Brady?  He hosts every other damn show.

I still believe Wayne Brady is trying to milk old Chappelle Show episodes for all they're worth.
