Roosevelt Lounge Back In The Headlines, And Not In A Good Way

ANOTHER UPDATE: Read about two eyewitness accounts of the incident, as told to Rocks Off's Shea Serrano Wednesday.

UPDATE: Activist Quannell X is organizing a protest in front of Roosevelt at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Fox's Isiah Carey reports.

Two apparently unrelated incidents at Roosevelt Lounge over the weekend have the Washington Avenue nightclub Roosevelt Lounge back in hot water for allegedly discriminating against minorities.

Almost a year ago - a year ago from tomorrow, in fact - the Houston Press ran the cover story "Getting Past the Bouncer," in which local party planner Imani Rose told us about getting turned away from the tony club at 5219 Washington, once with an all-female party, and another time with a group of mixed gender.

After the African-American Rose and her friends were denied entry, she said they watched the doormen let Caucasian after Caucasian into the Roosevelt. "It was awful and blatant discrimination," she said.

Now the Houston rap group Drank is saying this past Saturday night, the Roosevelt wouldn't let their group in either. "The doormen said we had too many black people," one of the rappers, Mozart, told Fox 26's Isiah Carey. "I looked around and saw my friends' reaction, and I knew it was real."

As with Drank, members of the Houston Dynamo were also turned away from the club, except this time two players were arrested after brawling with Houston Police Department officers. According to KHOU, backup goalie Tyler Deric and draftee Warren Creavalle were in a party that, as with Drank, were allegedly turned away from the Roosevelt because some people were black.

Oddly, the Dynamo incident is said to have occurred around around 4 a.m. It's not unheard of for athletes and other celebrities to get into some clubs after hours, but "Getting Past the Bouncer" co-author Shea Serrano says that as far as he knows, the Roosevelt closes at 2 a.m.

No one else involved is saying much of anything, except Deric's attorney, who says his client (a Klein native) is innocent.

Rocks Off has been in touch with Drank, whose new album is due in April, and will have their side of this ongoing story Thursday.

Roosevelt still around, still all white.

I am a black male that mostly hangs out with a mixed crowd (white, asian, and black). Had the EXACT same thing happen to me at Roosevelt a couple of weeks ago where they would not let me in, but the white people in my party. Washington street bars are known for this.

The Worst part of this is all the attention that DRANK is getting. This is a serious issue and It almost seems like comic relief to mention and picture these dorks.

Get someone not named Shea Serrano to report on this, she is obviously biased as she wrote an article against Roosevelt earlier this year.  Also if you read the police reports posted in the Chronicle you get the real story.  Hope Houston Press reports when Drank gets sued for defamaton and property damage that they caused that night.  And the Dynamo player has been in trouble before for partying to much and getting out of control, didnt see that in the report either.

What property damages, did the Roosevelt Club's sidewalk get dirty from the filthy racist comments coming out of their club?  I hope their liabilty insurance is up to date, sounds like they are probably going to need it!

Lol ok Mr. GM of Roosevelt... Defamation requires fabrication, of which none is present in this case (from what I've heard!) There are many racist allegations against Roosevelt, not just by the Dynamo players or this rap group. Roosevelt should be countersued for defamation of the character of Tyler Deric, a standup individual...literally...he stood up for human equality. WATCH IT SON!

also i don't know if you can read or not but Chris Gray actually wrote this story...

The chronicle Report was a joke.  They are going to retract that once the true story comes out, watch and see. "get sued for defamation and property damage"? how do you figure that? You cant sue someone for defamation when there telling the truth.

The reports in the Chronicle where the police don't mention anything about them being drunk? You'd think they'd mention something like if it were a factor. Considering eyewitness reports are all strongly on the side of the Dynamo players and their party it isn't looking good for the police involved.

Well said cfig.  You are absolutely right, the Chronicles story was a joke.  I find it funny how the lesser known papers and reporters always seem to put at the best story.  Well done Houston Press

The two incidents were the same one, poor reporting by the Houston Press,  not suprising

I'm by no means saying that the clubs are in the right but here is the thought on how things work in the Houston party scene.

1.Place/area of town gets jumping. Attracts crowds (both black and white) and becomes popular.

2. One or two people invite their 3rd cousin or or an old high school friend that happens to be a "gangsta". Good times are had.

3. Said 3rd cousin/high school friend goes back to the hood and tells everyone that there are plenty o' white girls to go around and chump white boys to sell shitty coke to.

4. The ghetto invades said spot and fights break out, then gun shots and finally it's not a happening place for anyone to go to.

This place, Sawyer Park and Hudson Lounge are run by some real shitty people. The public has to stop patronizing these places.

There are plenty of reasons to shut down Sawyer Park. I'm almost equally offended by the amount of burnt orange shirts you see hanging over the railing of that place on a Saturday. People: it was COLLEGE at an ordinary state school, from which most of you didn't actually attend or graduate. Just move on, already.

I guess some people peak during college and want to remember it.

This club should be shut down, not by the police, but by customers refusing to patronize a business allowing/promoting systemic racism.  I hope these stories continue to get attention.Too bad Quannell X saw opportunity in this one however, his involvement is never helpful or productive.
