Local Musicians, Up Early, Remember Late Nite Pie

Correction: Per the commenters, Late Nite Pie originally opened in the early 2000s, not the late '90s.

The flames at Late Nite Pie had been extinguished by 6:45 a.m.
Midtown pizza restaurant Late Nite Pie burned some time after closing in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. ABC13.com reported that the popular post-show destination suffered "major damage" and that Houston Fire Department arson investigators were on the scene.

The fire was estimated to have started about 3:45 a.m., about 45 minutes after Late Night Pie's closing time. The restaurant had scheduled the "My Funny Valentine" standup comedy showcase for next Tuesday.

Late Nite Pie started in the late '90s early '00s at the corner of Elgin and Bagby, site of the current St. Dane's Tavern, and moved a few blocks north to 302 Tuam in 2008. It occasionally hosted shows, and its musician-friendly hours - it once stayed open until 4 a.m. - and cheap beer made it one of the relatively few places around downtown to go eat after last call.

The Midtown streets were closed for several blocks after Wednesday morning's fire.
The flames were out by about 6:45 a.m., and early-rising local musicians were already taking to social media to pay their last respects.

"R.I.P. #LateNitePie," posted Boothpimps DJ Bizonee, a nominee for best DJ/Club Night at last year's Houston Press Music Awards.

"Sad to see this," said local industrial-rockers MIKE TERROR. "Late Nite Pie was the scene of one of the greatest shows we've ever done."

"RIP late nite pie #Deathbyfire," echoed local rapper Nosaprise.

Everyone, it seemed, had a Late Nite Pie story - even Rocks Off. Not to drop names, but our old Austin acquaintances Spoon were looking for somewhere to grab a bite after their Warehouse Live show in November 2007. We took them here.

My Funny Valentine comedy show is still on! It will be at Don Julio's, 322 Westheimer, right down the street!

Some of there food would be ok sometimes but it really depended on the night. There breadsticks were the most awful non breadsticks I have ever had.

I would pour a drink out for LNP, but in solidarity with the employees I'll just stand around looking pissed off and ignore people instead.

I think that sums it up best.

I liked the place in theory, but in practice I knew that If I went there, I'd just get frustrated.

Hopefully it will rise again, with better pizza and service.

First it said late 80's, now it says started in late 90's. Wrong on both accounts. Get it right HP!

That place originally opened at its original location in 2002/2003.

It was a mechanic shop beforehand.

It was kinda like the IKEA of restaurants. No one ever really wants furniture from IKEA... but it's cheap and immediate, but don't expect any kind of service or particular quality. LNP was never really that good (in my opinion), but if you were 3/4's drunk it was half alright.

The place was never the same after it moved. I'd still go there, but it was an exercise in frustration. Because when they were good, they were sooooo good, and where else could you get a slice that late? But most of the time they were just awful — service wise and food wise. Their taps were always half empty, and you'd be lucky to get a fresh slice. But if you did, man, it was tasty and cheap.

Still kinda sad to see it go.

Used to live around the block. The guys/gals behind the bar poored abnormally strong drinks. What a bummer.
