This Station Is Now Operational: At The Drive-In Is Reuniting. Finally.

With the beginning of a Twitter account and an official website, heavily influential El Paso-based rock act At The Drive-In has announced their reformation today. What the future will hold for the group, which splintered into the Mars Volta and Sparta after their 2001 split, is anyone's guess. SXSW? Coachella? A whole tour of the world? We'll see.

The band's albums, 1996's Acrobatic Tenement, 1998's In/Casino/Out, and 2000's breakthrough Relationship of Command are among the most revered indie-rock releases of the past twenty years, and their legend has only grown by the year. Their last Houston appearance was the Engine Room in 2000 with the Murder City Devils.

The band broke up in 2001, right as Relationship was being hailed as the great savior of modern rock, breaking through the clamor and flash of rap-metal. Sparta wasn't too far off from the sounds of ATDI, but Mars Volta, headed by lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López were like Pink Floyd on Adderall. They were last in Houston in September 2009.

This reunion is easily the most sought-after one of the past decade, right near the Talking Heads or a Smiths reunion.

Don't forget Jim Ward's Alt-Country side project "Sleepercar".  They released one album "West Texas", which I dearly love, along with my 3 Sparta ablums.  I'm looking forward to seeing what Ward and company will come up with in 2012... hopefully both an album and a tour!
