Del McCoury Band Descends on Conroe
Conroe's Sounds of Texas Music Series has pulled a major coup that should have local bluegrass fans' hearts palpitating with their booking of the Del McCoury Band for February 4, 2012.
McCoury and his band, which includes his sons Rob and Ronnie, both of whom are monster instrumentalists and singers, have been one of the top bluegrass acts in the country for a quarter century.
Known as one of the few traditionalists who opens up his repertoire to songs way outside the boundaries of bluegrass, reworking songs like Richard Thompson's "'52 Vincent Black Lighning" brilliantly, McCoury is currently a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He is often cited by jam bands such as Phish as a major influence.
The McCoury band's public recognition took a massive leap when they performed with Americana stalwart Steve Earle on his 2001 album The Mountain. After a period of touring, Earle and McCoury later fell out and ceased to perform together.
McCoury, who early in his career sang and played rhythm guitar for Bill Monroe, received a National Heritage Fellowship lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2010 and was elected into the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame this year. He has won literally dozens of IBGHF awards and has one Grammy to his credit.
