First Look at the Band Lineup for Chris Gray Day January 14
Chris Gray Day will be held in Houston, Texas on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at The Continental Club complex, at 3701 Main, affectionately known to locals that live near and haunt the grounds as "The Island". Today Rocks Off gets to announce the first round of bands playing that day's festivities, benefiting Chris's medical bills, which are mounting.
The day following the Houston benefit -- January 15 -- some of our Austin friends will also be holding a concert and fundraiser for Gray, at Austin's Continental Club, with James McMurtry, Allen Oldies Band, David Beebe 3, and The Gourds lined up as entertainment. Expect a few more names in the coming days too. Check out their Facebook site here.
I remember the day that my boss, Mr. Gray, had his heart attack like no other. The hysteria looking for him, finally getting word he was in the hospital and in a coma following his collapse on the Metro tracks. The first visit with him at the hospital was fun, with small signs of him peeking through the medications, and his recovery has been beautiful. Still waiting on that Wild Flag review, dude.
I am thankful that we are having a Chris Gray Day at all, because this situation is miraculous, and our man in due back in the editor's chair in just weeks. Call it a late Christmas present. He will probably be wanting his magazine subscriptions back too.
The lineup was in part curated by Gray himself, from bands that submitted their info for the cause. A lot of these artists have an emotional connection with him, and he has covered many of them extensively for the Houston Press. These are our family friends in a sense.

The bonanza of bands gets started at 10 a.m. and runs until they throw us out (or 2 a.m., whichever you prefer. During the day, kids are allowed in the venues accompanied by a parent or guardian, but in the evening, the event is 21 and up.
Even if you are over 21, it's probably a good idea to bring a parent or guardian. It's what I do.
You can purchase tickets for CGD or donate a little bit of cash at this Houston Press website, and this WordPress site is updated with the latest news on the benefit. As with the Austin show, expect us to drop a few more names as the event draws closer. Sadly, Bono has not returned my calls about U2 performing Achtung Baby in its entirety at the benefit.
