Artist of the Week: The Curious, Courageous Second Lovers

Each Wednesday, Rocks Off arbitrarily appoints one lucky local performer or group "Artist of the Week," bestowing upon them all the fame and grandeur such a lofty title implies. Know a band or artist that isn't awful? Email their particulars to sheaserrano@gmail.com.

Few bands in the history of the Artist of the Week column have had as steady a stream of You Should Pick These Guys As Artist of the Week support emails as Pasadena's folksy rockers Second Lovers.

No joke, people have literally been emailing every single day. And since this column is nothing if it not democratic, we gave them a proper listen, settling in on their Reverbnation page like it owed us money. And they were good. ARE good.

The foursome -- Nico Morales, Kathy Garza, Henry Largo, Ashley Parker and Santiago Paez -- weaves together charming vocals, semi-aggressive drumming and brave songwriting, which, coincidentally, just so happen to be three of the requirements for landing in this space on December 14th.

So we reached over for an interview. It's below. There is talk of robots, Jonah Hill and, duh, anal sex (those three things are not related). Read it.

Rocks Off:First, tell everyone everything they need to know about Second Lovers in exactly six words.

Second Lovers: Hot, nasty, badass whiskey sippin' heartbreakers

RO: What happened to the original lovers? What'd you guys do with them?

SL: Jonah Hill ate them.

RO: Your song "Rear Naked Chokehold," it's not nearly as ultimate fighty as people might assume. Can you talk about that a bit?

SL: We were in the studio talking about MMA fighters and the move was brought up. I really liked the title because it made me think of anal sex, which is perfect for a love song. Nothin' says I love you like anal.

RO: [laughs] You also have a song called "Whiskey Woman." Is she of any relation to any of the other famous Womans. "American Woman" perhaps? "Witchy Woman," maybe?

SL: I'd have to say a little bit of both without any relation to any of the songs. More like an American bitch than American witch that makes you want to drink an ass load of whiskey.

Listen to "Take You Home" by Second Lovers

RO: How do you guys divvy up who sings what songs?

SL: Well, Kathy wrote her song, "Rear Naked," and it just seemed fitting that she sing her own song. The others, it's just a matter of if they would go well with a girl's perspective. That's actually how we got Kathy in the band. I wanted a girl to sing on our song "Daydreamer" and here we are a year later. Parker, on the other hand, writes sappy love songs and forces me to sing them.

RO: When does the actual album come out? Talk a bit about that. And talk a bit about robots while you're talking a bit about that.

SL: In the summer of 2012, finally, after recording at SugarHill. Hell, we've been working on it for about a year, writing songs and all with our friend Mr. Roboto. Our record release will most likely be our home show on our tour up to Nashville in the summer. Megatron is our ride, of course. For now though, at our shows you can get a free demo from my fembot girlfriend or the mother of all things robotic: iTunes.

RO: Did you all give any consideration to maybe covering Juvenile's "Back That Azz Up" like Drake did, because I'm quite certain it'd be phenomenal.

SL: Actually, we were gonna wait and see how our cover of Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It" does on iTunes first.

RO: Anything you guys want to make sure gets mentioned? Go for it.

SL: Our first show of the year is January 13th at Late Nite Pie and then we're playing the 2nd annual Main Street Block Party. We do want to give a lot of thanks to Eric Dean and the folks at Pegstar for always hooking us up with great shows. Check out locallivehouston.com, just do it. Happy Christmahanakwanzika.
